Our team still studies “collective sensemaking” during breaking news events. What we see with MH17 and Jan6 are attacks on the sensemaking process itself… not just a distortion (like those described in this article) but a denial of service attack on sensemaking. www.cip.uw.edu/2023/12/06/r...
Facts, frames, and (mis)interpretations: Understanding rumors as collective sensemaking
The communicative solution to pervasive misinformation is not better facts, but better frames.

They're called public records for a reason. Starting today, WIRED will *stop paywalling* articles that are primarily based on public records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, becoming the first publication to partner with @freedom.press to offer this for our new coverage.
Wired is dropping paywalls for FOIA-based reporting. Others should follow
As the administration does its best to hide public records from the public, Wired magazine is stepping up to help stem the secrecy

1/ 🚨Our NEW study paints a shockingly bleak picture of how teens view the press. It also illustrates that there is a chasm between what teens think is going on in newsrooms versus what happens every day at credible outlets.

1/ ❌ NO: This is not a real video of WNBA star #CaitlinClark at a news conference. It's AI-generated.

🏀 Clark & #AngelReese are well-known rivals dating back to college & their matchups get lots of attention - making stories about them ripe for ragebait.

As a reminder: If a post causes a visceral emotional reaction, stop & ask yourself why *before* you share or amplify it. Bad actors take advantage of people's emotions to spread falsehoods.

#NewsLiteracy
When you see a post that outrages you:
- You're more likely to share it without stopping to check if it's true
- It's statistically more likely to be false or misleading
