Thirty two years ago today, Palm Computing announced the release of Graffiti, their gesture-based handwriting technology for #NewtonOS, General Magic #MagicCap, GeoWorks GEOS, Microsoft Windows for Pen Computing, Microsoft Winpad, and PenRight! devices.

The #AppleNewton never supported SSL, even with the Newton Internet Enabler.

Incredibly, a version of Mbed TLS was ported to #NewtonOS allowing third-party applications to use SSL.

Secure IMAP access has been available for the Mail V email client for several years now.

It’s a #MARCHintosh miracle, this MessagePad 110 that my friend gave me that used to belong to his dad’s friend is only minimally (all things considered) battery bombed, and powers up and works with external power.
An electronic device lays open on a bench. Around the battery contact and surrounding parts of the case are fuzzy blue-green bits, the signs of a leaking battery. The MessagePad on the same bench, but screen up and powered on showing it running NewtonOS 1.2.0, with a power cord plugged in to the lower right corner.

Twenty nine years ago today, #NewtonOS 2.0 received the “Mobility Award for System Software” at the Mobile Insights ’96 conference … beating out other contenders including Microsoft Windows 95, General Magic’s Magic Cap, and Geoworks’ Geos.

Unlike traditional operating systems such as MacOS, there is no file system and therefore no files in #NewtonOS. Data is instead stored in opaque collections like a database in #AppleNewton Soup
