This monday mornings motorised mountainbike mooch was a figure of 8 loop taking in the nearby pueblos of Salares & Sedella... As i sped down the shaded slopes on the far side of Canillas towards the roman bridge the sun was just poking his head over the other side of the mountain & was soon illuminating my way as i climbed the steep hill out of the valley towards my destination. Small birds & various insects flitted & fluttered across my path & the sun scorched sierra glowed golden in the low light. Above me flocks of jibbering bee eaters swooped & swirled in silhouette & above them five magnificent eagles circled & cried to each other on the updraft... which was nice. Descending into the next valley I was soon in the company of a shepherd & his bleating sheep who blocked the road for a short while whilst they made their way to fresh vegetation, their clanking neck bells playing a tune less hillside symphony as they did so. It was market day in Sedella when i pedalled into its curling cobbled calles. It consisted of one fruit & veg stall & one selling socks , pants & knickers. Niether was busy. I couldn't find a open cafe for breakfast so i headed back towards Salares via a countryside detour through farms of avocado , mango, almond & olive. To my disappointment when i got there the only cafe I'm aware of in Salares was closed too. Bugger! But nevermind i thought , i have water & an emergency peanut butter sandwich in my backpack. I'll stop at the next bench & fuel up on that. More bugger! I'd made it fresh before i left but had neglected to pack it. Still, the water was refreshing & gave me the impetus to push on up the long uphill back track to Fogarate where i was able to stop of for a cup of mint tea & a quick dip in the pool at a friends house where my current wife is performing dog sitting duties. Fully refreshed & sent on my way with a kiss i roared like a rocket down the steep paved road back towards Canillas touching 55kmph at one point with my orange w…
