The Southern planter suffered, not simply for his eco- nomic mistakess-the psychological effect of slavery upon him was fatal. The mere fact that a man could be, under the law, the actual master of the mind and body of human beings had to have disastrous effects. It tended to inflate the ego of most planters beyond all reason; they became arrogant, strutting, quarrelsome kinglets; they issued commands; they made laws; they shouted their orders; they expected deference and self-abasement; they were choleric and easily insulted. Lovely example of how weird real-world data is. I put all 55 million points in Overture maps into a Nomic Atlas map. Lots of points spuriously appearing in the ocean. But the 1° square around 'null island' (0° lat, 0° long) is suspiciously clear -- someone has cleared out bad data just there.

The folks at Nomic just released nomic-embed-text-v2-moe, a MoE (Mixture of Experts) embedding model with state-of-the-art retrieval performance across ~100 languages.
