They all predate nonvolatile memory. So you need to keep them switched on for HOURS at a time to charge the internal cells used for memory backup.

This computer is from 1980, so DRAM existed at the time. Space systems were slower to move to semiconductor memory because core memory was nonvolatile (kept its contents without power) and was resistant to radiation. The Space Shuttle didn't switch from core to semiconductor memory until 1991.

The weights are surely kept on hard drives or SSDs or some other nonvolatile storage medium somewhere, but when in active use, they're in VRAM. How much sits on VRAM at a time, I don't know, I hadn't given it much thought, but it might be 100%

I minmax my grocerycore by vertically scaling my meals. I can cluster 10 meals in a single cooksesh. Then I use containerization to horizontally scale them and store them in a meal warehouse. At any one time I have multiple meals accessible in nonvolatile storage.

My interpretation is "protected buffer" is a smallish volatile memory, and "recorded" is nonvolatile.
