The Nacken (also called the Nixie) is a kind of dangerous water-spirit of the North. As with most other water-spirits, they are said to lure people to drown in lakes, streams, and ponds, in this case via the use of an enchanted violin.

Just finished this one. I love how the big tree turned out. Bent and twisted is the recipe for trees. Hope you like it. This is the main illustration for chapter two in my secret book project. #procreate #folktro #vaesen #väsen #nordicfolklore #digitalart

Thematically we are going into the complete opposite direction with Bramble: The Mountain King now, as we finished Smushi Come Home.
After discovering his sister has been kidnapped by a giant troll, Olle must overcome both his fear and the bramble that crawls through the forest

A translation by me from Bengt af Klintbergs book "vänster hand och motsols". This story was written down in Småland around the 1920s. And the sheep in the picture is one of the lil cuties at my friends place.

Roaming the forest with Bear, Wolf, Fox and the other Finnish woodland animals in this charming book: An Illustrated Collection of Nordic Animal Tales by Pirkko-Liisa Surojegin (translated by Jill G. Timbers). I wish I were more like a fox sometimes - they seem to have the most fun.

Old Scandinavian trolls belonged to mountains, caves, and rocky wilderness. Some tales even explained unusual stone formations as trolls caught by sunlight; a reminder that the wild landscape was once imagined as inhabited.
