norvig vindicated
Similarly if you look at the history of linguistics and the Chomsky-Norvig debate, and consider the Chomsky side of the debate to be the expert, when subsequent events have vindicated Norvig entirely.

I met peter norvig at the funeral we held, and even peter norvig couldn't successfully intercede on my behalf. that's how fucked up google hiring is

There are definitely multiple uses of "agent" in AI. The engineering view: A system designed to take actions in order to achieve goals. (Russell & Norvig).

Seems like a good time to post quote from Stewart & Norvig (3rd edition) of events in 1997.

"Kasparov said that he felt a “new kind of intelligence” across the board from him. Newsweek magazine described the match as “The brain’s last stand.” The value of IBM’s stock increased by $18 billion."

saw someone here mocking claims that popular pathfinding tools use AI and cited A* search as a non-AI algorithm. heuristic search is at beginning of russell and norvig book. it was the first attempt at a general purpose intelligence!

good lord this entire field is just people badly copying other people badly copying russell & norvig

The neural network bestiary is actually much larger than just feed forward neural networks, with Hebian networks, recurrent networks, an others, but Russell and Norvig will give you a very solid foundation.

actually I have a Norvig anecdote. in ~2014 he gave a short talk to my university's CS PhD cohort over skype. our dept was _not_ on board the DL train and we did not have real compute to play with. fellow student asked how to navigate that and Norvig replied "idk finish and come work at Google lol"

Time travelling Yud got Peter Norvig really enamoured of python so that the "AI language" would be terrible for large projects.

Russell and Norvig "Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach" has part of a chapter covering Neural Networks under statistical learning. You might be able to find it at the internet archive and borrow it to read that one section. That's general Neural Networks.

agents as an ai academic term have been around since 1995 (Russell and Norvig) about entities perceiving environment and performing actions

but also its just very fun to say "have your agent talk to my agent"
speaking of agents, i really hate that “agent” is the term that solidified to describe these AI systems

My username is a reference to the Russel and Norvig Artificial Intelligence textbook! There is an example of a "devious vacuum" robot that deposits dirt on any empty square of its finite state space!
any reason you picked vacuum for the username? just liked the feel of the word?

Anyone amazed by inference-time scaling should read Chapter 3 of Russell & Norvig.

Anyway... o1 and o3 are not brute force search. They are heuristic search.

Heuristic? Isn't that a bad word? Heuristic search is powerful. One might think of the LLM as being applied as a universal heuristic.

As Peter Norvig and I argued back in 2023 (www.noemamag.com/artificial-g...), we effectively crossed the general intelligence threshold when models mastered language, because competence at language inherently involves open-ended task generality.

This is funny because I also always thought of the normality distribution there as bimodal and really sharply spiky; you had Justine, but also Peter Norvig and Jeff Dean, who are _too_ normal.

My 8000-word note on agents: huyenchip.com//2025/01/07/...

1. An AI-powered agent's capability is determined by its tools and its planning ability
2. How to select the best tools for your agent
3. How to augment a model’s planning capability
4. Agent’s failure modes

Feedback is much appreciated!
Agents
Intelligent agents are considered by many to be the ultimate goal of AI. The classic book by Stuart Russell and Peter Norvig, Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach (Prentice Hall, 1995), defines ...
