Absolutely. I set all this out in a blog post in October 2023: chrisgreybrexitblog.blogspot.com/2023/10/not-..., tho since then things have changed in that UKG have dropped the (self-imposed) requirement for it to be used in GB. It *is* confusing, but annoying when ppl who should know add to it.

Quality has deteriorated enormously. The shortages aren't as bad as they would be if all checks were imposed. The 'NotforEU' labels & increasing lack of sell-by dates on perishables is of huge concern for food safety.

Avoiding Hard Border: The "Not for EU" label is a mechanism to avoid a hard border between Great Britain and Northern Ireland, which would have required strict customs and sanitary checks Individual labels Under the Northern Ireland Retail Movement Scheme some food products will need individual product labels with the words ‘Not for EU’. These requirements will be brought in through 3 phases from October 2023 to July 2025. This includes products imported into Great Britain from the European Union and certain products from the Rest of the World. You only need to label the outer packaging of a multipack. In the first phase, only products moving into Northern Ireland under the Northern Ireland Retail Movement Scheme will need to meet the labelling requirements. From phase 2, the government intends to introduce labelling requirements in Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) following consultation.
