More Ghost Ranch numinosity.

We have stripped all things of their mystery and numinosity; nothing is holy any longer.

As a writer of some numinosity, I was interested in the premise of the essay, but I gave up halfway through. Read more, say less! 😄

Tealby: high on the Lincolnshire Wolds - wide views & tingling numinosity. I spent a few days there in late August & knew it was special. What I didn't know then was there's reason to think this was the base for a late Roman cavalry unit, the Equites Taifali, which seems far-fetched until ... 👇

Thread (don’t bug Nome)…
There’s a numinosity craver in the brain that will create a sense of the sacred because it’s hardwired and it matters to us at a level we don’t understand. When it breaks, it’s bad.

We build ideas to believe in, feel awe about, and ask ineffable questions of.
Broke: Star Trek says humans will abandon all religion in the future.

Woke: Dune says religion will continue to be both a source of strength and a tool of control for oppressed peoples.

Bespoke: Babylon 5 says we'll get MORE religions, and Jews will have to sort out what alien foods are kosher.

Now AI art is coming at the same disgusting idea from the other end. It is an assertion that images have *no* market value, and therefore that there is no such thing as art.

This is also disgusting. It is anti-human

Because it denies numinosity of human expression (from which art actually springs)

Word of the day: "temenos" - a sacred place, an area of landscape dedicated to worship or deemed to be divine.
From ancient Greek TÉHEVOS; in Latin, a "fanum". Metaphorically, therefore, a space of special sanctuary, imaginative power or numinosity.
Where is your "temenos"?

I had to look up "numinosity" and I'm all the better for it

In your "all religion is bad actually" takes are you including indigenous religious practices around the world?

All forms of Buddhism? (not all religions are deist)

All experiences of numinosity?

How about liberation theologies?
You aren't keen on the civil rights movement?

“In her pure numinosity, Sophia is forbidding.... Because she is a guide who always leads [the gnostic] towards the beyond…Sophia appears to him sometimes as compassionate and comforting, sometimes as severe and silent, because only Silence can "speak," can indicate transcendences.”

Next week's Hookland talk is written and I just need to lose 20 minutes of material from it. Hopefully, this paragraph on the importance of folklore and re-enchantment will be retained. #Folklore #Reenchantment

My ideal life would be as a conduit
Transposing numinosity into music
Traveling around to share raw, wild sounds
And unraveling Knots so tightly wound
Helping the lost feel a little more found
Eroding the chains which keeps us bound

What about you?

Dragon Age such good games for people who grew up believing in god but kinda don’t anymore, only the part of the brain that responds to numinosity still does that 🥴

Listening to something that really drove lots of thoughts about numinosity in my life, the search for it, the way it’s evinced itself in different settings and phases, and what it means in the greater scheme of things.

A very low-church Episcopal priest once gave a homily at my very high-church Boston parish where he talked about the moment he realized the liturgy could be about mystery and not just meaning.

Mystery, awe, ancientness and numinosity — those feelings aren’t inherently liberal or conservative!
One reason movements like SSPX thrive is the tight bond between traditional liturgy and conservative theology and politics.

That bond makes some sense — conservatives want to conserve. But it’s not inherent or inevitable.

… since the symbol derives as much from the conscious as from the unconscious, it is able to unite them both, reconciling their conceptual polarity through its form and their emotional polarity through its numinosity.

In my quest for good fiction about very angry and violent women, I am reading The All-Consuming World by Cassandra Khaw. I didn't know words could do that. Outstanding so far and I'm barely into it.

A++ line: "Her casual numinosity is frankly offensive."

Was sitting here minding my own business when numinosity descended upon the scene
