Tealby: high on the Lincolnshire Wolds - wide views & tingling numinosity. I spent a few days there in late August & knew it was special. What I didn't know then was there's reason to think this was the base for a late Roman cavalry unit, the Equites Taifali, which seems far-fetched until ... 👇

Next week's Hookland talk is written and I just need to lose 20 minutes of material from it. Hopefully, this paragraph on the importance of folklore and re-enchantment will be retained. #Folklore #Reenchantment

Dragon Age such good games for people who grew up believing in god but kinda don’t anymore, only the part of the brain that responds to numinosity still does that 🥴

The future of logging and conservation is one and the same
This commentary is by Jonathan Leibowitz, the president and CEO of Montpelier-based Northeast Wilderness Trust, and Robert T. Perschel, author of “Numinosity: A New England Forester’s Search for the Ineffable” and former executive director of the New England Forestry Foundation. The closure of Finch Paper’s pulp mill in Glens Falls, New York, is a blow that will echo across the Northeast for years. For loggers, truckers, foresters and woodlot landowners, this is not some distant threat to worry about in the future. It is — today — lost income, lost markets for wood and the continuing fraying of a way of life. One of us has spent a career practicing and advancing forestry; the other leads an organization devoted to wilderness protection. You might expect us to disagree about what comes next. We don’t. Because we both understand a truth that gets lost in moments of crisis like this one: The amount of land we can set aside as wilderness depends wholly on how well we manage the rest of the forest and thus the health of the timber industry. Both wildlands and managed woodlands are needed. Conservation underpins it all. Wildlands and managed woodlands are not competitors. They are...

I have some words for them...

Listening to something that really drove lots of thoughts about numinosity in my life, the search for it, the way it’s evinced itself in different settings and phases, and what it means in the greater scheme of things.

A very low-church Episcopal priest once gave a homily at my very high-church Boston parish where he talked about the moment he realized the liturgy could be about mystery and not just meaning.

Mystery, awe, ancientness and numinosity — those feelings aren’t inherently liberal or conservative!
One reason movements like SSPX thrive is the tight bond between traditional liturgy and conservative theology and politics.

That bond makes some sense — conservatives want to conserve. But it’s not inherent or inevitable.

2) Numinosity is the thing we all strive for - we seek gnosis - we want to know what it's all about before we either cease to exist or burn for all eternity. We want there to be a reason. There may well not be a reason, but we somewhat need one to be there.

'Drawing on museum studies, book history, material studies and the history of emotions, it argues that books participate in meaning-making through their material presence and emotional resonance.'

Generally, yes, but it does depend on what you're writing and who you're writing it for.

I'll happily talk about syncretism or numinosity in articles, but they're not words I'd use in a spy novel.

We can all learn a little bit from The Cat in the Hat.
