Japanese brokerage giant SMBC Nikko Securities and UK-based blockchain infrastructure firm Nethermind have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Uniswap Labs, Base, and the Nyx Foundation to build a compliant, institutional-grade decentralized finance (DeFi) liquidity framework for the Japanese market. Dubbed the "DeFi Gateway," the project seeks to bridge traditional finance and on-chain markets. Key components of the initiative include: * **AI-Driven Infrastructure:** Developing agentic vaults and verifiable AI interfaces to automate and simplify on-chain onboarding for Japanese investors. * **Regulatory-Compliant Frameworks:** Utilizing Uniswap V4 hooks to integrate custom Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Counter-Financing of Terrorism (CFT) mechanisms alongside investor protection safeguards directly into liquidity pools. * **Expanded Asset Deployment:** Extending liquidity provisioning across digital assets, stablecoins, and real-world assets (RWAs). ### Organizational Roles The consortium divides strategic responsibilities across traditional financial compliance, protocol engineering, and security research: * **SMBC Nikko (Co-lead):** Directs regulatory dialogue with authorities such as Japan’s Financial Services Agency (JFSA) while leading compliance, risk modeling, and portfolio management strategies. * **Nethermind (Co-lead):** Oversees technical architecture, engineering delivery, AI strategy, smart contract security, and liquidity hook validation. * **Uniswap Labs:** Provides technical integration expertise and liquidity deployment strategies for the Uniswap Protocol. * **Base:** Supports deployment within the Ethereum Layer 2 ecosystem, focusing on technical feedback for agentic payment infrastructure such as the x402 open protocol. * **Nyx Foundation:** Advises on custom hook structures, advanced market-making strategies, and security optimization.
