Is obesity-related gut slowing only about muscle? In obese mice, blocking a receptor that senses calcium sped intestinal transit without changing how quickly the stomach emptied.

Is coffee good or bad? Studies vary, but this New Orleans cardiologist has done the research.
Dr. Carl “Chip” Lavie has been a cardiologist at the John Ochsner Heart and Vascular Institute in New Orleans since 1989, specializing in preventive cardiology, obesity management, cardiac rehabilitation, exercise physiology, and advanced cardiac imaging. He has been an active researcher with more than 1,900 medical articles. Dr. Lavie published his first paper on the effects of drinking coffee 15 years ago, at a time when public perception was that caffeine and coffee were bad for you. Is that how you first became interested in the health effects related to coffee consumption? Coffee is one of the most commonly consumed pharmacologically active beverages across the world, with over 50% of Americans above the age of 18 drinking coffee on a daily basis, and another 30% of the population consuming it occasionally. The remarkably high prevalence and frequent consumption of this beverage is a big opportunity, because even small health effects from coffee — positive or negative — could translate into large effects on public health. It just so happens that for decades, the public narrative was saying something negative about coffee’s effects on us. This narrative suggested that its stimulatory effects could raise blood pressure and cause adverse effects on...

I'd imagine the health insurance industry - notoriously reluctant to treat obesity as the chronic disease it is - is just lapping this up.

In any case, no. Spades are spades. Eugenics is eugenics.

Even if the call is coming from inside the house.

When we discuss the anti-vaxxer movements attempts to reduce vaccination take-up, we often describe that (correctly IMO) as part of a eugenic agenda.

But we're to think that reducing access to obesity treatment isn't? Now that we finally have non-invasive treatments that work well for many?
October 4, 2026 at 9:19 AM
A moral panic stemming from guilt is one thing - but 'eugenics'? Aren't you being dramatic?

Am I?

Obesity can kill. As someone who has had it almost all my life, I really wish it couldn't, but it can.

It kills quickly and it kills slowly. And it kills a lot.

So why? Why do they want this?
Initially I thought it was mostly psychology. Obesity has historically been treated as a moral failing (we get our own deadly sin!), with the result that there's a social license to be cruel to people who have it. And that cruelty doesn't always come from strangers.
October 4, 2026 at 9:19 AM
Those encouraging this moral panic tend to discount the treatment experiences of people with obesity - a rhetorical move made really easy by obesity's societal associations with greed, laziness, stupidity, weakness and lack of willpower.
