Ed and Stede stand very close together. They don't touch. Ed wants to. God, does he want to. "You ever worry someone's going to steal one of your sculptures?" Stede asks, still looking at the empty frames. Ed can sense Stede's fingers twitching beside him. "Nah, I make 'em pretty heavy. The thief would have to be fuckin' ripped." "I've got fairly large biceps you know," Stede says lightly, raising an eyebrow at Ed. Ed looks Stede over, nice and slow. They left their jackets in the coatroom,and Stede's rolled the sleeves of his floral blue button-down up to his elbows. Ed's eyes linger on Stede's freckled forearms, his thick fingers. "I...yeah, I have noticed that. Over the years."

Ed can't concentrate. That's nothing new, really. Ed isn't world renowned for his ability to focus on corporate PowerPoint presentations. He's a world-renowned visual artist, dammit! Unfortunately, that's exactly why he's in this room, listening to some stooge named Geraldo map out a "brand strategy" that includes things like "demand generation" and "KPI." Ed squints at the slide, trying to suss out what exactly "KPI" stands for. King Peanut Initiation? Kill Panda Insurgents? Kissing Pals Intimately? So now that's got him thinking about kissing. And Stede. And kissing Stede. It felt so good to kiss Stede — like picking up an unfinished work of art and finally hitting the right groove — images and sensations sparking in all parts of his brain at once. But then, kissing Stede felt good every single time it happened (three distinct incidents, eleven individual kisses, not that Ed had rewound the tape and made a secret tally in his head).

Blackbeard slows to a stop when they finally reach the Real World - or what he assumes is the Real World. He's never actually been here before, but it sure isn't Pirate Land. For one thing, there are smells. So many smells! Not just the tang of plastic and the comforting musk of cardboard, but some sort of salty smell that stings his nose, and a fresh green smell that tickles a bit. And the sun! The sun isn't just a circle, it's - dickfuck it's bright! - probably shouldn't look at that too long. And it's warm. Blackbeard's whole face feels warm, like he's entered the gentlest of Easy Bake Ovens.

"I just wish..." Ed starts, and then shakes his head. "Nah, it's stupid." "Go on?" Stede says, hope mingling with the caffeine and the sugar in his bloodstream, making him feel like he could levitate a little if he tried. "I wish we could have a fresh start." Ed shrugs, as if he's dismissing his own idea. "We could do that." Stede says, not entirely sure what he means by it. The wheels in Stede's head are turning, propelled by pancakes and the memory of kissing Ed, a memory he won't shove down and hide, not ever, not this time. He can't go back in time. He can't hit "undo." But he can change things from here on out. He can start again.

They've had a fight. Doesn't matter what it was. Ed stacked the firewood "backwards." Stede put the empty marmalade jar back on the shelf. It was a nothing fight. A triviality. A trifle. Except pirate captains (even former pirate captains) don't trifle. They live and die by the sword. They've commanded men into battle. They've got Captain Voices. They use them. Of course, on the Revenge, it was all play. Even when Stede came back and Ed wanted nothing to do with him, it was play. Tug of war, hide and seek, capture the flag (the flag's the fish). The stakes had changed, but not the game. Here, on the island, the game has disappeared like mist at dawn. And Ed doesn't know what he's doing.

Upstairs is creepier than downstairs, if that's possible. There's a room with an old cradle and a rocking horse that Ed's positive is haunted. Stede scoffs at him, but also proceeds to conduct his tour in a creepy rocking horse voice for the next two rooms. Ed responds in a Victorian ghost child voice, and the tour derails for a good five minutes. "Okay, okay," Stede says, getting his giggles under control and going back into business mode, much to Ed's chagrin. "I want you to have a look in the kitchen, get down to brass tacks." As they make their way down the back stairs of the ruined house, Stede's talking about blueprints and permits and he sounds like a man with a plan. His own plan, for once, not someone else's. It's exactly what Ed wished for him all along. It's everything Stede couldn't do back then — back when Ed was in his life.

But... it's always the same, isn't it? These French fools started scrambling the moment they saw Blackbeard's flag. He didn't even have to threaten them with his gun and sword (Blackbeard only carries one of each, but they are pretty intimidating). The same thing happened last week with the Dutch, and the week before that with the Spanish (though the Spanish had tapas, and that was nice for a change). Blackbeard is thinking all these thoughts as he fights back-to-back with Jim, whirling and slashing and stabbing, guts popping out everywhere. "Great raid, Captain!" says Jim. Steak Knife joins the fight, garroting one of the sailors who tried to stab Jim. "Yeah, Captain, this raid has everything! This is the best day ever!" "That's right, mate!" Blackbeard says, suddenly feeling a little frantic, "It is the best day ever! And so is tomorrow and the day after tomorrow and even Tuesdays and every day from now on until forever!" The Pirates all let out a hearty cheer. The feeling inside Blackbeard only gets worse and suddenly, it comes out as words: "Do you ever feel like you're treading water, waiting to drown?" Suddenly, all the fighting on deck comes to a screeching halt. Everyone - the Pirates, the French, even the hungry sharks watching from the ocean - stops what they're doing to stare at Blackbeard.

Stede says, trying not to remember all the idiotic stunts he'd seen Jack pull over the years. Stede's a gentleman, so he extends a hand. Jack removes his arm from Ed's shoulders and shakes Stede's hand with a punishingly tight grip. Stede promises himself he's going to wash that hand thoroughly in the men's room before he leaves the premises.

The laughter got louder as Ed made his way belowdecks. He knew whoever it was probably didn't want him around. He was still persona non grata with most of the crew, even though he'd done his penance — and he'd ponied up a good bit of coin for this Calypso's Birthday fuckery, and he'd agreed to buy thirty cases of Frenchie's witch-repelling tincture, and he personally poison-tested the mushrooms Roach was putting in tonight's stew, and he offered himself up for a round of practice sparring with Jim (he was definitely going to regret that one in the morning). But Ed heard those happy voices cheering and shouting and he just couldn't help himself. He wanted to be part of it. No one ever became a pirate because they actually liked being alone. Being alone was just a thing that happened to Ed, entirely by accident, when he got too good at hurting anyone within close range.

But today, there's something particularly magnetic about Stede in his tailored suit and crisp white shirt. The shiny gold watch that's a tad too big for his wrist. His hair, all slicked down the way he does it when he has to see his parents. It's a style that isn't really him, but he still looks, well, beautiful. Ed flicks some ash into the daffodil bed. "Thought you quit." "I did." Stede says, all eyelashes and dimples as he makes a "gimme" motion with two fingers. Ed sighs and hands over the pack and a lighter. He isn't present as he does it, not really. He's thinking about that other life, where Stede takes Ed's cigarette from his lips without asking.
