So Stede breaks the kiss sooner than he wants to; still, he has to attempt to adjust himself discreetly. Ed, of course, doesn't miss it, though he merely flicks his eyes downward before looking Stede in the eye and grinning. If Ed's smug—and he is—he deserves to be. His magnetism is far, far too much for Stede. But goddamn it feels good. He'd figured he just wasn't that sexual a person. Turns out that he was definitely Edsexual; he just hadn't had the opportunity to learn that yet.

And maybe Stede’s cynical attitude was, at least in part, due to the fact that his own eyes had never given a single beep in his life. They just didn’t do it.They wouldn’t. They couldn’t. At first, when the beeping hadn’t started up during puberty as it did for everyone else, his parents had laughed it off in front of their acquaintances with common phrases like “He’s a late beeper, our Stede” or “Still waters beep deep, you’ll see”, while trying to beat the beeps out of him behind closed doors. His father had taken that approach quite literally, attempting to get the noise to appear by physically punishing Stede for not being able to produce it, yelling at him whenever he’d stared at another new acquaintance for ages with no results or setting him on a rigorous exercise course to make him “grow up”, which meant chasing him around the garden lap after lap until he puked. His mother meanwhile had dragged him from doctor to specialist to quack, who made him drink revolting concoctions or gave him monthly shots that did nothing but make his arms swell up, and finally to a supposed mental health professional, specialising in ocular sound retention who had pressed and probed Stede about his most private thoughts and actions until he left every session in tears and deeply ashamed of himself.

A Little Restraint Fyre Chapter 145: The embodiment of subtle Summary: For the first time in several weeks, Stede woke first. He had noticed at the time, but had mistakenly assumed it was Ed getting a jump on the day. After all, they both had so much going on and he’d been setting his own alarms earlier to make sure he took advantage of as much of the day as possible too. Funny how clear hindsight made things, when Ed had cracked apart, snapping and brittle, and stormed away, only to come back and cling onto him like a shipwrecked sailor on a rock. With his eyes the largest they had ever been, Ed had taken the gentle order to bathe and rest at once, yet another sign of how much he really needed it. And now, there he was, tucked up in their secret cabin, a place warm and cosy and safe.

This is HAPPENING! Well it seems #WIPWednesday has jolted my brain into gear, so here we go with Chapter 12 of Ed’s World, where the crew get Stede’s verdict on their handiwork #OFMDfic
When Stede and Ed appear after a leisurely breakfast, they're surprised to find the entire crew milling about, seemingly waiting for them. What did you think then, Captain? Pretty impressive wall sconces, huh? Those were all my idea!' Pete says, followed by Wee John, 'I'm still working on all your curtains but every hem in that room is by yours truly!' 'I hoisted all the chandeliers!' Archie yells, flexing an arm and kissing her bicep, while the Swede chips in 'And I accidentally broke the glass that other captain fixed. But isn't it so much better now?', with a shrug which reveals bandages on both his forearms. They're crowding around Stede now, in a way Ed does not appreciate but Stede is simply beaming at them all fondly, turning to each of them in turn to listen as they shout over each other to gain his attention. 'You all did an absolutely marvellous job, and so quickly too! I love it, thank you, to each and every one of you! The crew erupt in victory cheers, hugging, slapping each others backs good naturedly. Ed is rather taken aback that the crew are so invested and almost as proud of Stede's surprise room as Ed is himself. He's still not used to people giving a shit about things that don't benefit them directly. It's a good feeling.

“Steve,” Jackie booms, pushing through the door and letting it swing shut behind her, catching the guy who was walking in on her heels and punting him back into the hallway. “How you doing?” “I’m good,” he says automatically. “Really good.” He’s not… exactly that. He’s 50. He’s in the middle of a divorce that’s mostly harmonious, but not all the time. His father just died, not that it was any great loss, but it’s certainly come with more emotional upheaval than he’d anticipated. His latest day job hasn’t been going what he’d call wonderfully—in fact he was a little bit fired last week, told that he doesn’t ‘have what it takes’ to work in towels, whatever the work was even supposed to be in the first place. And every time he talks to Lucius about the future of the podcast, Lucius hedges in a way that makes Stede very very nervous. Really, what he could describe all that as is not good. Terrible, even. “Great,” Jackie says, making her way down to the other end of the table, where she drops into the seat opposite his, leaving at least twelve seats of distance between them. Very reminiscent of the old dinner table at home, with Mary staring daggers at him across the polished wood. Jackie takes a long drag from her cigar and blows the smoke out before she talks again. “You caught anything spooky lately?” “Ah,” Stede says. He was prepared for this question, but suddenly the damn briefcase won’t open, struggle as he might with the latches. “Well. Yes! Or… not exactly.” He winces at the purely murderous expression on her face. “We’re so close, Jackie. We just need another season and we’ll—” “Get yourself another Mothman, no, wait, no, what was it? A feral cat behind the weed store?” She taps the ash off the end of her cigar, waves it in a slowly smoking circle in the air. “Oh. Maybe you could find yourself another Loch Not-Ness Monster, only this time in the ditch behind the high school instead of in the ditch behind the boot factory.” The sarcasm is as thick as the smoke, and Stede sighs. “We really have tried.” “Trying doesn’t get Jackie ratings,” she says, leaning back in her chair, arms folded. “Trying doesn’t get you or me a fuckin’ Pulitzer.” “I’m not… entirely sure we’ve ever been in contention for a Pulitzer, but—” “Shut it.” Jackie clicks, and he does as he’s told. “You got one more chance, Steve. That’s it. Next show, you find me something real, or…” She mimes dragging a finger, but not across her throat, across her… nose? That’s threatening enough. He gulps, nods. “We’ll find something. We really will this time.”

He gasped as he turned the corner, startled to discover that Stede was already there, doing exactly that. “You weren’t here before.” Stede’s smile was bright, and Ed noticed that he was completely dressed for the day, in a too fancy suit. Right, back on-cycle, guests arriving later. “No. I came in while you were in the bathroom. Good sleep?” “Perfect except for the last part. I woke up alone.” “I do love to linger, but there are limits, especially on days like these.” “I know,” Ed grumbled, taking the coffee mug from Stede’s hand. He was up to four sugars now, and working his way to admitting how many he actually liked, but he’d been hiding it for so long that it was still hard to be honest about it. He sipped the coffee and prodded at the thing he didn’t very much want to say. Maybe it could wait forever. Only, it couldn’t, which was the problem. “I need to go home.”
