Earlier this week, @Wizards_DnD announced that the updated edition rules will be put into the Creative Commons, alongside the Fifth Edition. And with that, the OGL is dead! Long live the OGL!

Her again? Last time it was the OGL scandal and the Pinkertons with WOTC.

Those customers...are not yours. They are Hasbro's customers. The OGL gives you the opportunity to make some money building out Hasbro's brand, but no matter how good your product? It's still Hasbro's brand.

Hard to believe that the OGL crisis that led to the ORC license was just about 3 years ago.

lots of folks mentioning that the movie came out right after Hasbro kicked off a boycott with their OGL bullshit and it is extremely Hasbro to aim a shotgun directly at their own foot the second they try to bring their product to a broader audience

It's been two years since Wizards of the Coast's attack on the OGL led to the promises of new licenses and new games. How's that all shaken out? What happened to the new licenses and the many RPGs affected by the OGL assault?

Hasbro/Wizards: Remember that guy who was the face of fixing the damage from OGL 1.1?

HR: Yeah, he did good work.

Hasbro/Wizards: Cut him.

my HRT provider just sent out a very long rambling announcement in the client portal about them being subpoenaed that included suspicious use of markdown formatting, bountiful em-dashes, and also this really awesome prose

Also, where's the idea that the pre OGL period was a bad one coming from? I could pick up RPGs from the high street. The period post Vampire pre OGL was an absolute explosion of creativity the OGL killed.

If the AI, OGL, Pinkerton, or the BG3 layoffs controversies didn't make people stop playing D&D or MTG, this won't either.

The new D&D Systems Reference Document (5.2.1) was released into the Creative Commons on May 1, 2025, likely sunsetting D&D's stewardship of the Open Gaming License, a truly revolutionary piece of open source contracting.

Acronyms are a mistake.

"I got into the OSE SRD after the 3E OGL debacle. What are the main differences with HP? Is AC descending or ascending?"

They have played us for absolute fools.

"I find it galling that after the OGL issue, it turns out Wizards is suddenly the most permissive by releasing their system under Creative Commons."

"It's infurating that other publishers are still trying to write their own licenses instead of using the Creative Commons"
