#OTDIH in 1922, #SouthTexas received its first #radio broadcasts from right here in #SanAntonio! #WOAI was founded by G.A.C. Halff and notably employed local staff, among the first in the nation to do so. By 1928, WOAI joined the world’s first broadcasting network, #NBC. Happy 104th birthday, WOAI!

Luckily, authorities had already considered how to protect the Cathedral’s noted « vitraux » in the event of any explosion at a nearby grenade-filling factory. #1GM

#OTDiH in 1914, the #1GM French Army briefly occupied Mulhouse (at that time, German and called Mülhausen) in #Alsace. Soon forced to retire, they re-entered the city on 19 August, before again being forced out on the 24th.

The article also suggests the likeliest date to be 19th August 1914. I’m less sure of this. As a momentous event in Alsatian history (a French invasion/the return of the lost lands to French control - dependent on which side of the fence you were on), it feels more likely that the *initial* entry on 8 August 1914 is the occasion).

The first color image from the surface of Mars was released a day later, July 21, 1976.

It was *not* the one you see today! Viking scientists were so surprised by the orange skies that they initially shifted the color calibration to make Mars look more Earthlike. 🧪🔭

#OTDIH in 1865, the Freie Presse für #Texas, a #German -language newspaper, was founded here in #SanAntonio. The periodical was not only famous for its language but also for prominently sharing #abolitionist sentiments, leading thousands of German families in the #South to oppose the #CivilWar.

Founded by August Siemering, the paper was a five-column, four-page publication that released biweekly, triweekly, & sometimes even daily issues. Siemering was eventually forced to serve the Confederate cause despite carrying staunch Unionist sentiments throughout his life. As mentioned in the original BlueSky post, many German families in the South & predominantly in Texas sympathized with the abolitionist movement, leading many of these families to be slaughtered by the Confederacy. In one remarkable story, families congregated in the Texas Hill Country near San Antonio at a place called Freethinker’s Rock to plan their escape to freedom in Mexico, perhaps along the Southern Underground Railroad. Sadly, these families were intercepted along the border before they could flee to a safer & freer life. May they RIP.

It’s been a hard and yet triumphant year for Minnesota. Ordinary people have been targeted by their fellow countrymen, and made heroic sacrifices for their neighbors.

So, appropriate to remember that 163 years ago today, 262 average Minnesotans sacrificed themselves at the Battle of Gettysburg.

KARSTADT Der sechsgeschossige Stahlbetonbau war seitlich durch zwei markante Türme begrenzt, auf deren Dächern jeweils eine hohe Lichtsäule stand, dazwischen ein 4.000 Quadratmeter großes Dachgartenrestaurant. Verkleidet mit fränkischem Muschelkalk, die Fassaden ein Stilgemisch aus Neugotik, Expressionismus und Art déco.Das Karstadt-Haus war mit 21 Rolltreppen, 20 Fahrstühle und einer direkten unterirdischen Ver- bindung Kreuzungsbahnhof Hermannplatz der städtischen Untergrundbahn für die damalige Zeit ausgesprochen modern.Im Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde das Haus am Hermannplatz weitgehend zerstört. Am 25. April 1945 legte die SS Sprengsätze, damit die Vorräte im Keller nicht der Roten Armee in die Hände fielen. Nur ein kleiner Teil des Altbaus blieb erhalten, in dem noch 1945 wieder ein Verkauf aufgenommen wurde.
