I still think the moment where Oddyseus mindlessly shoots at Polythemus instead of bragging about his real name was the moment it jumped off of being an adaptation of the poem really. It's using the poem for aesthetics / familiarity. It's not the Oddysey imo.

^ I second this. Oddyseus is a prideful asshole in the original story. He doesn't have regrets in the same ways. He's not nearly as much of a Moses figure of a pios character in the original poem. The change is deliberate. It's a Christian lens 100%

Yeah when you have stuff like odysseus' men being deemed unworthy on some sort of spiritual level but Oddyseus still commits horrific acts of violence that's approved in an ordaned way by the narrative just because he regrets...kinda. it's saying certain people are permitted to commit violence.
