Three men from Liverpool have been convicted after a convoy of seven off-road vehicles caused damage to protected countryside in Wales. John Robinson, Michael Williams and Joseph Hodgson were among the group that travelled more than 3km onto privately owned land and the Berwyn Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in Denbighshire on 1 June last year. The vehicles drove across sensitive peat and blanket bog towards Moel Fferna, leaving deep tyre tracks and damaging the protected habitat. Natural Resources Wales described the environmental damage as irreversible, warning that ruts can alter the water balance of blanket bog for years, degrading wildlife habitat and reducing its ability to store carbon. The activity also affected farmers and landowners by disrupting working land and potentially increasing costs. Investigators were able to identify members of the group partly because they had posted footage of the off-roading on TikTok. Videos showed vehicles travelling along muddy tracks in heavy rain, one vehicle becoming deeply stuck and others being driven or parked across the countryside. Hodgson, 23, did not co-operate with the investigation and failed to attend an earlier court hearing. He was nevertheless convicted of criminal damage at Wrexham Magistrates' Court on the basis of joint enterprise. He was ordered to pay more than £2,000 in compensation and costs and was given a three-year community behaviour order banning him from entering the entire Berwyn SSSI. The offences were committed while he was already subject to a community order for similar countryside offences. Robinson and Williams were also convicted and received fines and two-month driving disqualifications. Natural Resources Wales said the case highlighted the wider impact of illegal off-roading on fragile habitats, landowners and conservation efforts.
