After sunset Te Ruataniwha (Ben Ohau 1522m) with the magnificent Ōtaao (Dobson River) & Te Awa Aruhe (Hopkins River) flowing from Kā Tiritiri-o-te-moana (the Southern Alps) into Lake Ōhau.

Ultra wide very blue panorama of the Lake Ōhau area, with a mountain, tussocks & a lake. Ben Ohau Range is a mountain range in Canterbury Region, South Island, New Zealand It lies west of Lake Pukaki, at 44°S 170°E and east of the Dobson river and Lake Ōhau. The Ben Ohau range is dominated at the southern end by Ben Ohau (1522m). Other mountains in the range include Backbone Peak (2263m), MacKenzies Peak (2200m), Glentanner Peak (2551m) Ferintosh Peak (2497m), Mauka Atua (2557m), Kai Tarau (2542m), and Mt Dark (2496m). At the northern end Mt Cran stands at 2444m, Jamieson Saddle at 2183m and Mt Edgar Thomson at 2379m. Te Ruataniwha (Ben Ohau) is the prominent cone-shaped mountain near the outlet of Lake Ōhau. Te Ruataniwha was an ancestor on the Ārai-te-uru waka that capsized near Matakaea (Shag Point) on the Otago coastline. After the capsize, many of the passengers went ashore to explore the land, however they needed to be back at the waka before daylight. Many did not make it, including Te Ruataniwha, and instead transformed into many of the geographical features of Te Waipounamu. Following the eviction of the Waitaha prophet Te Maiharoa and his followers from Ōmārama, where they were camping as part of their protest against the Crown asserting ownership of the South Island high country, Te Maiharoa and 12 of his followers climbed Te Ruataniwha. From the mountain, Te Maiharoa had a vision to resettle his followers back at the old Korotuaheka kāinga at the mouth of the Waitaki River.
