Freyja was confiscated by US Fish & Wildlife after it was discovered she was kept as an illegal pet. She was brought to the @ojairaptorcenter for assessment, where it was determined she was ineligible for release to the wild after becoming habituated to humans.

Sad update about Jackie (Patient 26-519). I don’t know whether she’s going to make it. And at some point they’re going to have to make difficult decisions about that.

DAMN. Jackie the famed bald eagle of the Big Bear Valley bald eagle pair has passed away. There’s not a lot of things these days that seem to bring joy to everyone in a unified way but Jackie and Shadow were one that did. Very sad day.

Patient Update: Bald Eagle 26-519It is with profound sadness that we share that Patient 26-519 passed away in the early hours of this morning, following more than three weeks of intensive medical care.Over the past several days, her condition continued to deteriorate despite intensive treatment and the combined efforts of our veterinary team and consulting specialists. She remained critically ill, receiving oxygen therapy, supportive treatment, and around-the-clock monitoring in our intensive care unit.Throughout her time at Ojai Raptor Center, every decision was guided by the available medical evidence, her welfare, and our responsibility to do what was in her best interest. Her remains have been transferred into the care of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW).We know this news will be deeply felt by the many thousands of people around the world who have followed her journey, hoped alongside us, prayed for her, and supported the people caring for her.Our team is heartbroken. It has been an extraordinary privilege to care for her. We ask for patience and kindness as our staff process this loss. We are working closely with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and will provide a more comprehensive statement including additional information on her treatments and test results. To protect our staff and community during this difficult time, comments on this post have been turned off.To everyone who cared about Patient 26-519, thank you. Thank you for your messages, your prayers, your encouragement, and for standing beside our team throughout these past weeks. We are deeply grateful for the way Patient 26-519 brought people together through a shared love of wildlife.

Update on #Jackie from #OJAIRaptorCenter . Jackie has been away from Shadow and Big Bear for 2 weeks. It sounds like she won’t be home anytime soon. (He suggested weeks or months of recovery still ahead.) I hope she keeps fighting and improving and they find answers. 🦅

Update on Bald Eagle patient 26-519 from Big Bear LakePatient 26-519’s condition remains stable but critical as she remains in intensive care and receives round-the-clock supportive treatment. Our veterinary team is working to determine the underlying cause of her illness. She is currently receiving several prophylactic treatments to help support her body. After showing encouraging improvement following her blood transfusion, she experienced a setback on Saturday when her blood values declined again. Since then, she has improved once more. She is eating on her own, her energy and alertness have noticeably improved, and she has become much more feisty during feedings. One of the most encouraging changes we’ve seen is her packed cell volume (PCV), which measures the percentage of red blood cells in her bloodstream. Her PCV has increased from 8% before the weekend to 16% today (7/27). While this remains below normal, it is an encouraging improvement, and we will continue to monitor her bloodwork daily as we keep a close eye on her progress.Despite extensive diagnostic testing and consultation with experienced wildlife veterinarians, we still do not have a definitive diagnosis. Cases like this can be incredibly complex, and we will continue adjusting her treatment as new information becomes available.Thank you for the thousands of messages of encouragement and continued support. Because minimizing stress is an important part of the recovery process, we kindly ask that you give our veterinary and rehabilitation teams the time and space they need to focus on patient care. Please refrain from calling, texting, emailing, or visiting our facility for updates. We promise to continue sharing meaningful updates through our official social media channels as soon as new information becomes available.Thank you for following her story and supporting the work that makes this level of care possible. Every message of encouragement, share, and donation is appreciated.

So: it’s ok to enjoy webcams of animals you like. It is NOT ok to harass, attack, baselessly accuse, or threaten anyone involved in the care of those animals. If you follow me&feel ok calling the private homes of ppl w/ #FriendsOfBigBearValley or #OjaiRaptorCenter pls unfollow me. That is absurd.

EDIT: Positive news on patient 26-519 coming soon.Regardless of what the coming days bring, one thing is certain: Jackie’s story has changed the future.Millions of people around the world have followed Jackie’s life through the nest cameras. They celebrated her victories, worried through her challenges, and ultimately came together to help protect the place she calls home. That may become one of the most meaningful outcomes of her story.Raptors are more than magnificent birds -they are keystone species and important indicators of ecosystem health. By protecting habitat for Bald Eagles, we’re also protecting the forests, wetlands, streams, and countless other plants and animals that share these landscapes.Habitat loss and fragmentation remain among the greatest threats to wildlife. Without healthy, protected habitat, there would be no Bald Eagles soaring over Big Bear, no chicks hatching in towering Jeffrey pines, no wildlife rehabilitation centers working to return injured birds to the wild, and no nest cameras inspiring millions to care. One Bald Eagle inspired millions of people to protect the future of an entire ecosystem. The result is far bigger than one nest or one eagle: generations of Bald Eagles, and all the wildlife that depends on this landscape can continue to thrive. That is the true power of conservation.Photo courtesy of @fobbv.officialView all 1,064 comments
