Perhaps the best thing about car-free hiking is not having to deal with the car during the hike.

You can hike across the Sierras from Nevada City to Truckee, and take the train back! From outside Visalia, across Olancha Pass to Hwy 395!

In 1974, I spent a summer cleaning up airplane wrecks in the Sierras. One free day we hiked up to Olancha Peak. I was astounded at how cold, windy, and generally unpleasant it was compared to where we’d been at a comparatively salubrious 8000 feet.
