Ten years ago at IBM, I was the tech lead of the OpenJ9 JIT compiler's optimizer team. The optimizer comprised 70% of the JIT's code, and since performance is the only purpose for a JIT, nearly every work item by anyone on the JIT involved tinkering with the optimizer.

IBM also had their own implementation of Java, J9 which is now Eclipse OpenJ9. Then you have a bunch of smaller JVMs, most defunct, some still active.

But as I said, I use OpenJ9/ IBM Semeru which doesn't have hotspot. The author explicitly states "UseCompactObjectHeaders".

Interesting. And an extremely great overview! I skipped the part about hotspot as I use OpenJ9 on Semeru, and optimizations are backported to older releases.
Can't wait for structured concurrency! Hopefully it will be included into the next LTS!

-Xmx`cat /sys/fs/cgroup/memory/memory.limit_in_bytes`
This forces older Java versions (pre 8u131) and OpenJ9 to adhere to @Docker memory settings in cgroup.

Don't know why yet, but turns out that running a Spring Boot app using virtual threads on OpenJ9 24 or 25 in a Linux container results in continuous high CPU load, which did NOT occur on their 21 JVM. Starting investigation, but all clue suggestions are welcome!

JEPs 524, 525, 526, 529, 530 are only preview/incubator.
JEPs 516, 522 is hotspot-only (I use OpenJ9 🚀).
JEP 517 is http/3. No endpoints. 🤷🏻♂️
JEP 504 is just an API removal.
JEP 500 just issues new warnings.
So, why bother..?
