Because I’m a library evangelist, I have to add that I got these tickets for free from the library.

Check if your library has a Discover Pass (it might be called a Culture Pass or Explore Pass). You can get free passes to zoos, museums, symphonies, operas, etc. It’s such a cool resource!

TPIR was such a bonus. Then I had to get tf off of TV because it was nothing but soap operas.

I always thought that she took on the role of “writer of operas” in part so she could always say “I was reading up on this.” Because in fact her specific knowledge also always far exceeded that of even other educated women.

My mom would give us plain toast. I would watch soap operas and game shows.

Same sick remedy for me too. Except we lived on a military base in Canada which didn't have cable tv access there.

Antenna tv when you were sick meant horrible soap operas, and Coronation Street! I also hated flat ginger ale as I was a lousy impatient sick kid!

This week's omnibus has been brought to you by a huge bunfight looming in the posh pit. Honestly, do they not watch soap operas? #thearchers

For no reason at all this morning, I am suddenly remembering (and feeling very nostalgic for) those screensavers from the late 90s/early 2000s. Those things were like mini-soap operas. There was one that had fish swimming around, but my fav was this one with a guy who was shipwrecked on an island.

Meant to say, I got hold of 'Les Troqueurs' & it's a delight - ta for the heads up!

When I was cataloguing it, I realised I already have a couple of operas by Dauvergne - 'Hercule Mourant' & this very listenable gem, which I misremembered as being written by someone else (apologies M. Dauvergne!):

Nez kāpēc atcerējos Operas spoku. Tur divi veiksmīgi metāllūžņu biznesa darbinieki bija pārņēmuši operas vadību :D

You see stuff like this.
Coming out of the BORING soap operas of anime.
It really makes you think,
"What is the goal for our exercise in this sequential Arts graphic novel? What do we want to impress upon our readers as a learning experience?"
Is this scene communicating what it's supposed to?

In a literal form yes, for the visual homage, but I feel he owes more in this setpiece to some of the early Hong Kong Blood Operas by Corey Yuen and the works of Sam Peckingpah.

The slow motion ballet of bloodshed, each cut maintaining purpose and propulsion, it's the work of a master craftsman.

What with it being Amelia’s birthday (she’d be 35 if she was still alive) I’m thinking about the Ig Nobels today. We had tickets to go with friends in 2017; she was in the hospital so didn’t get to join us.

I’d love to go again but among the many things our “leader” cost us: it’s in Zurich now.
Meet the 2026 Ig Nobel Prize winners
The annual award ceremony features miniature operas, scientific demos, and "24/7" lectures.

A modern remake of Amadeus set in the late 90s, where Salieri poisons Mozart after seeing a display of ”NOW that’s what I call repertoire” CDs that are entirely operas by Mozart

A lot of the criticisms I see about soap operas in general are sort of missing the point. They’re meant to be slow, they’re meant to be a bit repetitive. They’re made to air a full episode every single weekday all year round with maybe a couple days off for holidays. It’s fun background watching.

Something about me that I don’t usually ever get to talk about with anyone: I like soap operas LOL
October 3, 2026 at 6:22 PM
I had all the posters from the operas I did in college framed and stored in my house. Somehow, in emptying my house, we never found them. Just fuckin gone.

It probably doesn’t bode well for me as a dramatic composer that the operas I’ve listened to most, by far, is a set I have difficulty taking seriously as drama
O.K. Might have covid, definitely at least a cold, and didn’t sleep enough, but let’s do this.
Tune in tomorrow for me live posting through my first ever watch of Wagner’s Ring cycle

Please tell me Freia gets a better part in any future operas in the cycle

Crazy that it's still rare to see black weddings on soap operas in 2026.
#OnThisDay in 1973, Ed and Carla’s wedding began. Famous pianist and jazz singer Hazel Scott made a guest appearance performing a wedding song she composed for the episode. Ed and Carla’s wedding marked the first time a Black couple wed on daytime #OLTL #OneLifetoLive
