Optogenetics wins the Nobel – one neuroscience breakthrough in a line of technological innovations helping scientists map and control the brain
Neuroscientific advances follow a pattern of visualizing the brain, measuring its function and then controlling it. Optogenetics may lead to a new era of medical treatment.

I reviewed the science in Yaa Gyasi's novel "Transcendent Kingdom", which is also one of my favorite books!

Gyasi explores optogenetics as a possible treatment for substance use disorder. Optogenetics is a very exciting topic with a very timely relevance. 🔦

Not easy but there's some pretty insane/cool shit in the works with optogenetics (Nobel 2026) and sonogenetics.

Use gene therapy add light/sound-sensitive proteins to (specific types of) neuron. Apply light or sound modify neuron behavior

...so we built a way to rewrite the rules in living cells. In real time, a microscope watches cells and a computer steers motion with optogenetics according to rules written in code. Change code, change how cells interact. This rule makes cells collide💥
