🍒🪶Excited for our new article to come out in

We show that falcons attracted to orchards using nestboxes reduce food safety risks and crop damage from wild birds.

Falcons reduce pre‐harvest food safety risks and crop damage from wild birds
In the absence of American kestrels, there are more birds in orchards. This leads to increased crop damage and more bird faecal contamination.

Nice article on the value of ecosystem services provided by kestrels in Michigan's cherry orchards 🍒. Features work by @michiganstateu.bsky.social colleagues.
Thank you, @benjij.bsky.social, for making me newly obsessed with this fierce little falcon 💙

Fascinating piece about the link between tenacious predators and how they not only benefit the landscape — but our food, too.

Washington’s cherry season is collapsing—ICE fears have driven pickers away. Some farms dropped from 100 workers to 20. One lost 300 bins. Small growers are on the brink. 🍒
Washington cherry growers struggle to find pickers
The threat of federal agents raiding orchards is forcing a labor shortage that has caused some Washington producers to leave cherries unpicked or delay their harvests until fruit gets over ripe, which...

I pretty much always have fantasy-like dreams but recently there’s been a lot of fruit! Fruit to eat, orchards to walk through, planting seeds that turn straight to fruit 🍓🍒🍇🍑🍊🍋

What an epic job by our volunteers on Friday, planting 50 fruit trees for current and future generations to enjoy, whilst supporting habitat creation, conservation and biodiversity! Well done all!!! Thanks to the Ashford Community Orchards Fund for the trees! 💚💚💚💚

#Cocktail Hour. Husband Unit made a fabulous rum Manhattan.

1 oz Planteray OFTD
1 oz Planteray Stiggins’ Fancy pineapple rum
1 oz Foro sweet vermouth
1/4 oz Amaro Brucato Orchards

I garnished them with one of those sour cherries (višnje!) I bought today. 🍒 #Cheers

sadly they’re not ripe yet but they’re prone to splitting if they get rained on so the cherry growers get helicopters to come and hover over the orchards to get the water off the cherries 🍒

One of the last surviving Cherry orchards in Sunnyvale, right next to the tennis courts where I play, and near the last location (which has now closed) of the CJ Olson Cherry stand on El Camino Real. While they’ve closed the stand, their products are still sold in local grocery stores. Delicious 🍒

📣 Some news from the sweet cherry orchards!
❄️ A bit of hoarfrost on the buds, so beautiful!
🍒 The sweet cherry trees have cold requirements to be satisfied.
🌡️ The low temperatures we experienced mid-January are therefore good news!

🍒 Tree of the Day: Nanking Cherry (Prunus tomentosa)

Fast. Hardy. Beautiful. This cherry shrub/tree hybrid punches way above its weight.

✅ Hardy to zone 2
✅ Fruits in 2–3 years
✅ Pollinator magnet
✅ Ideal for hedgerows, windbreaks, or permaculture orchards

Saw this article and was disappointed by the Montana dessert selection too.

We have loads of cherry orchards along Flathead Lake which are infamous here. 🍒 I'm casting my vote for a nice cherry cobbler to represent my home state! 🫶

How we miss sampling! Did you know that in the 1960s, Verona was the top province in Italy for cherry production?🍒 Today, cherry orchards are shrinking (1,300 ha) due to urbanization, vineyards and hill management issues; the system has evolved from mixed crops to specialized, high-density plots.📉🚜

We stop at little pop up stands where the 🍒🍒🍒 are being sold by an individual who has brought them fresh picked from the orchards a few hours away so much more affordable and delicious!

I also enjoy picking cherries, but I go for those on trees in orchards instead of internet data farms---they're much tastier 🍒

I grew up with migrant children playing together in the cherry orchards in Traverse City, MI. while their parents and my Mom, Aunts, and Grams picked cherries. I think it was about 35 cents a lug. A lug is close to a bushel but it's box shaped. They worked hard, and us kids played nicely together. 🍒
