#Organ-Chips
Inside the fluidics are blood cells from one of the astronauts on the Artemis II mission.

For each astronaut, one chip goes to lunar fly-by, the other stays on Earth in classic experimental-control.

The blood cells have been cultured into bone marrow progenitor cells...

Organ chips and other new technologies are getting good enough to challenge animal testing. But proving they work may be easier than changing how science gets done. https://spectrum.ieee.org/alternatives-to-animal-testing?share_id=9999524

When driving home after picking up a pizza or fish and chips from a take-away, I need to get the food home hot, so I imagine I am transporting a blood transfusion or organ transplant to a hospital and drive accordingly, fast but safe.

First, we had layers of cells growing on plastic.
Then, we made organoids.
Now, we have organoids growing on a structure that simulates blood flow.

These 'stem-like' cells are capable of producing diverse blood system tissues in this small space.

They're an approach called "organ-on-a-chip" (OoC) we use in other research models to avoid having to invasively biopsy human tissues.

Instead, we use blood to make stem cells to make tissues.

AVATAR (A Virtual Astronaut Tissue Analog Response) is an experiment using miniature stand-ins, or “avatars,” of the Artemis II crew's bone marrow. Bone marrow plays a vital role in the immune system and is particularly sensitive to radiation.

MYTH ❌ The only way to determine a drug’s safety is through animal studies.
FACT ✅ Animal-free methods—like organ-chips made with human cells & tissues—enable scientists to develop safe & effective medicines that benefit people & spare animal lives.

god aspic is so good have you ever just eaten the sheet of organ-meat and mushroom flavored jelly off of a tub of pate. The pate's also good. I'd eat pate straight out of the tub but I try to make it last so I spread it thickly on a halved baguette. Pickle chips and diced onion go good on it.

Organs on a chip are cool, no doubt. In vitro tests bring many benefits to the table, including the ability to more precisely control test conditions. And who knows what AI tools will be used in the future.

However, a chip, dish, or 💻🤖 is NOT a body & at least at this time, can not replace one. 🧪
