Common Blue butterfly seen today on a roadside verge as were the flowers of Orpine and Scabious both of which were attracting the bees. A tractor in local field was creating lots of dust as the ground is exceptionally dry but that may have changed a little since the thunderstorm.

This plant is new to me this week. I read about it on @brigitstrawbridge.bsky.social and suddenly realised I had taken a photo of one last weekend while at BBOWT Warburg. Orpine has many weird alt names: frog’s stomach; midsummer men; livelong; witch’s moneybags

Another English name is Orpine, though I like the alternative names. I wrote about it a year ago - Orpine, Hylotelephium telephium | Jeremy Bartlett's LET IT GROW blog share.google/LbanzyQEEO3E...

NFG total of 9 last night, including one NFM in shape of a smart, smoky-grey Orpine Ermine. Rubbish memory tells me that Yellow-backed Detritus Moth might be NFM too. Do I trust it? No. So I'll have to check...🙄

Four of the 9 are pictured.

The deer leave the iris alone. But the fuckers have absolutely destroyed the tulips and the orpine. I'll have to move those inside the fence. Also they keep nipping the new shoots from the rosebushes.

Good thing the deer have at least tasked one of their […]

Orpine’s striking star-shaped flowers and succulent leaves bring late-summer vibrancy to any garden.

Plus, it thrives in poor soils and needs minimal care—perfect for low-maintenance gardeners.
