Anglophones always act like Welsh has a bizarre orthography, like Gaelic has a bizarre orthography, like Polish has a bizarre orthography, when in real life they could get around this with the simple realisation that not all languages pronounce the letters of the Latin alphabet the same.
It's very funny because Welsh is written far more phonetically than English. Once you know the alphabet it's easy to tell how a work will be pronounced.

orthography is spelling and how certain sounds are represented in writing, *not the writing system itself*. for example: spanish orthography is extremely easy because wysiwyg with spelling, whereas in french orthography, a lot of things that are spelled out aren't actually voiced.

What it would look like if Finnish followed French orthography.
As someone who probably still goes as Mrs. Yanne in some French records, this somehow breaks my brain :D.
(BTW still bigly mad that literary Finnish wasn't codified based on Savo dialect. It would've been gloriously silly.)

one of my loudest and wettest Writer’s Opinions™ is that italics are a load-bearing element of the orthography of modern english and in many cases are Not Optional. english makes Extremely heavy use of prosodic stress to clarify the meaning of sentences, up to & including disambiguating grammar!!!!!
