2 Feb: Feast Day of St Findech Duirn of Cell Fhinnche in Osraige; now obscure but it's likely to be #Killinny, Co. #Kilkenny, not far from #Kells Priory (Dr Elva Johnston). Its medieval tower houses give local name of "Seven Castles"! Founded 1193 by Strongbow's brother-in-law 📷Dave Henderson

Feb 13: Feast of Mo Domnóc, a saint associated with the early medieval kingdom of Osraige (Ossory / Co. Kilkenny); he was believed to have been a beekeeper who brought the first honey bees to Ireland from Wales; of course bee species have been in Ireland for longer than the Irish! 🌱

When the Ordovices went to Ireland, they became the Deisi. First they lived in Meath. But the High King got tired of them and sent them South. They seized Waterford from the Osraige and had a kingdom there for a while. Ultimately they went back to Britain and seized Demetia.

“EOCHAID.”
Eochaid was in the middle of the field, with one arm wrapped around someone’s neck and the other holding someone by the ankle. Both victims were flailing; Eochaid was standing perfectly still and smiling at his cousin.
“For Osraige," said Eochaid, with innocence.

Medieval Ossory (Osraige [Old Irish], Osraighe [classical], or Osraí [modern Irish]) is now modern Co. Kilkenny and western Co. Laois, between Leinster and Munster, with Waterford as its southernmost point.
