#Othello
this was the production where he was Othello and everyone else was black.
Patrick Stewart as Othello at DC's Shakespeare Theatre in the late 1990s. Still one of the greatest performances I've ever seen.

The Shakespeare play most suited to the 21st century is Othello, a play where Iago in his first scene announces he’s a racist who wants to destroy Othello for reasons of racist jealousy and then the cast and the audience spend the rest of the play pretending his motives are inscrutable.

He could quote Othello and Beavis & Butthead; a true Renaissance man.

I took an acting class with a guy who was in an all-Black production of Othello, except for Patrick Stewart (who played Othello). The way he talked about Stewart felt like one of those extremely rare instances where your heroes live up to your expectations when you actually meet them.

In 1997, my sister Patrice Johnson Chevannes worked with #PatrickStewart in a “photonegative” production of Othello @ the Shakespeare Center in DC. Patrick did not want to play Othello in blackface, so director, Jude Kelly, cast Black actors in all of the other roles with my sister as his Desdemona.

It was both because he wanted to be Othello and because he wanted to give black actors roles they wouldn't usually get to play.

Also, on this day in 1604, William Shakespeare's tragedy "Othello" is first presented.
Just think, in 1604 penning an interracial love affair. Paul Robeson and Denzel Washington did the role of Othello justice on American stages.

RIP, Sir Patrick Stewart, who I loved in many things but also got to see in person once — at Shakespeare Theatre's race-reversed Othello while in undergrad. (Look it up. It happened!)

Here is the NYT obituary: www.nytimes.com/2026/10/29/a...

1 November 1604. William Shakespeare’s tragedy Othello was presented for the 1st time at The Palace of Whitehall, London. The play is renowned for its portrayal of jealousy and race though it was not until 1833 that Othello was 1st played by a black man on the London stage.

You should maybe look up the context in which othello has historically been performed and get back to me, thanks

A fantastic actor and the only white guy in my lifetime to pull off Othello www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie...
Patrick Stewart, ‘Star Trek’ Captain and ‘X-Men’ Superhero, Dies at 86
He’s forever known for playing Jean-Luc Picard and Charles Xavier, whom he “admired for their morality, for their kindness, for their sensitivity, for their compassion.”

In 1997, Patrick Stewart starred as Othello in a “photo-negative” production at the Shakespeare Theatre in Washington DC.

Almost 30 years later, I’ve measured every other Othello by his performance.

I'm feeling like the White Othello
Looking up Patrick Stewart's theatre credits en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick... and the tentative few minutes between "what do you MEAN he played Othello" and "oh cool, what an interesting way to do the casting" has a massive "PHEW" in it as well as further reason to salute him.
