Interesting interview about #OurFragileMoment

Just did a mentoring session with a junior in college working on a physics degree who wants to go into Ph.D. work on hurricanes. He had never heard of the IPCC. I bought him a copy of #OurFragileMoment from @michaelemann.bsky.social
and #SavingUs from

Duty, yes.
The Protestant work ethic?!
And a stubborn unwillingness to give up while it still seems possible to avert the worst of the #ClimateCrisis? @michaelemann.bsky.social

yes--I discussed this at length in my 2023 book #OurFragileMoment. There's no evidence -- at least given current policies -- for any "tipping point" behavior in global average temperature. But there are potential tipping point elements of the climate system related to AMOC, ice sheets, etc.

oops, sorry, I was looking at the IOP article. I'm very familiar w/ Tapio's @nature.com article. In fact, I discus it at length in #OurFragileMoment (bookshop.org/p/books/our-...). Here's an excerpt:

Turns out the P-T extinction is a poor analogy.

Human-caused climate change is increasingly dangerous. But we're nowhere near civilization-ending warming at this point.

It's in our hands. That wasn't true of the dinosaurs!

Great thread here by Ray Pierrehumbert (aka @climatebook.bsky.social) on the global carbon cycle and the determinants of atmospheric oxygen concentrations, and why fossil fuel burning is leading to the slow drop in oxygen (I discuss in #OurFragileMoment: www.barnesandnoble.com/w/our-fragil...)

I also talk about doomism (and how it is ill premised) in #OurFragileMoment.
The bottom line: there is urgency but there is agency.

In #OurFragileMoment (www.barnesandnoble.com/w/our-fragil...), I discuss the ACTUAL lessons we can take from Earth's climate history, lessons emphasizing both urgency and agency. We can still maintain the fragile moment we've been afforded on this planet, but the window is beginning to close.
