The top rose it fully open, and is seen from a bottom angle, with its multiple layers of petals alternating in color depth depending on whether struck by light or shadowed by other petals. The second rose, below, is half opened, and the colors are more shadowed by the tightness of the petals, There is one rose bud off to the right just barely showing color. The roses alternate with dark green leaves on the stem. The flowers and leaves are lightly sprinkled with raindrops.

A mess of roses: this is the Fairy rose I love and planted everywhere I have lived.  It’s tough and flowers repeatedly. It has masses of flowers covering its rambling branches and will keep flowering until winter. Bees love it

A detail of a Rosa "Mutabilis" bush full of open roses shows how crumpled the individual flowers are. There are several here, in various shades ranging from peach to rose to yellow, in stages of unfurling to petal dropping. One in particular is highlighted, with its irregular petals streaked like a bright rose sunrise, and a yellow heart full of unfurling stamens. The leaves are a pleasant, warm yellow green.

Lavender hosta flowers rise above their chartreuse-green leaves in the backyard, covered with raindrops, a couple of which are reflecting the plant leaves. One hosta flower is showing its elegant curved pistil and the brass-colored pollen in its stamens. Pink roses with slightly faded edges are decked out in raindrops diffusing the pale rainy day light. The Sadler’s oak still has some green acorns. The acorns are clustered atop the stem, surrounded by rain covered leaves. We expected the squirrels to eat them pretty soon, bit hope to snag a few to germinate for more shrubs. The leopard plant (Ligularia dentata) has bright orange-gold daisy like flowers rising on stout stems rising leaves shading from dark purple to green. A few raindrops here and there enhance its striking colors.

Rocky Mountain maple leaves are turning color. Here, the focus is on one leaf with the rest of the branches leaves slightly blurry but echoing the colors. The leaf, which is palmate with five attenauted, dentate lobes, starts out yellow green at its attachment to the red stem. Then the colors grade from yellow to orange to red at the outer edges. The veins are yellow, which makes them easily visible in the red shading. A little bit of sunlight shines among the leaves, giving an autumnal glow to the photo. Fireweed is still blooming! We cut back the big main stem, and smaller stems grew out from the bases. The green leaves look like willow leaved.The four petaled flowers are bright magenta. The stamens are white and the anthers are yellow with a magenta stripe bisecting them. The pistil has a pink tip. The background in this photo is full of greens and yellows from turning leaves. These rosemary flowers on this shrub's branch are very pale lavender. Their top two petals are fused, the two side petals spread out like wings, and the bottom petal is long and frilly. You can't see the stamens in these, but the pistil forms a long arc, pressing up against the top petals and then down like a tiny white proboscis. The green, strongly aromatic leaves below the flowers are needle shaped. A small cluster of pink and white roses gives a last burst of blossoms before the end of fall. The single petals are slightly crinkly and surround a bunch of stamens. There are several buds ready to open among the green rose leaves.
