#Outcrossing
Very happy to see this study out! The transition from outcrossing to selfing involve convergent patterns of flower trait covariation academic.oup.com/aob/article/...

Ruthie the pig was a kunekune. (My friends keep them, although I think theirs have some outcrossing with another heritage breed.) #BehindOurFlag

New Article: "Ginger genome reveals the SMPED1 gene causing sex-phase synchrony and outcrossing in a flowering plant" rdcu.be/eJPdX

SMPED1, located in a dichogamy-determining region in Alpinia species, controls the timing of sex-organ synchrony.

📢 Viewpoint in New Phyt. on polyploid establishment!
Key take-homes🧵
1. In contrast to earlier hypotheses that pollinators can help new polyploids establish, we suggest that pollinators mainly prevent polyploid establishment because outcrossing increases the strength of minority cytotype exclusion.

Check out this paper by Shelley Sianta, myself, undergrad Amal Suri, @ybrandva, and Dave Moeller! Despite the notable absence of ANY early-generation hybrids in our dataset of 410 plants from selfing and outcrossing #clarkia sister taxa, we found substantial admixture. 1/4

It feels surreal to see my PhD research featured on the cover of Science www.science.org/doi/10.1126/.... Incredibly proud of the work that went into this. And so grateful for the opportunities, resources, support and mentorship from co-authors and my whole scientific community that made it possible

Yep. It’s a real issue. Dobermans are one example of a breed that is in deep, deep shit due to incredibly pervasive heart issues, but the breed club remains very resistant to outcrossing.

Fascinated by this amazing native legume, American hog peanut (Amphicarpa bracteata) and its bizarre reproductive strategy. It is an annual that makes both below-ground (cleistogamous/selfing) flowers and aboveground flowers that are either cleistogamous or chasmogamous (outcrossing). Amazing plants

#plantsci Random question for Arabidopsis people: has anyone compared the impact of selfing A.thaliana in labs over successive generations vs maintaining the same ecotype in wild environments (low level of outcrossing), on inbreeding depression? @plantevolution.bsky.social

reading about dcm in dobermans is a straight up horror show. from an outsider pov it seems obvious that:
1. theyve hit a genetic wall that only outcrossing and loosening of breed standard could possibly fix
2. breeders will never do those things
3. all purebreeds will eventually hit this wall.

Yes. The plan, beginning with the current GMO trees, is to do extensive outcrossing to produce fertile, resistant trees.

G'mornin' Before I'm off to work for the day, here's one of my wife's favorites in the house #blooming today. #Mammillaria schumannii globosa. I really need to buy 2 more for outcrossing genetics. Have a good Monday ✌️

Are you bored of the low natural genetic variability of Arabidopsis thaliana? Check out our new resource www.arabidopsislyrata.org, where we put together 1018 genomes of A. lyrata and 736 genomes of A. arenosa, mostly outcrossing species that have higher genetic variability compared to A. thaliana.⬇️

Norway banned breeding Cavalier King Charles spaniels on the grounds that it was a violation of existing animal cruelty laws.

And Finland is undergoing a genetic rescue project with careful outcrossing.

ok tbf there’s definitely some backchannel outcrossing stuff going on with Malinois and Dutch shepherds bred for police and military purposes, but it’s also done on the DL for a reason lol
