#Overviews
Call me a Luddite, but I think Google should make an version of search that doesn’t have AI overviews and it makes available to everyone—not just schools—and rely on the usefulness of AI overviews to earn itself users

There is an extension that is free if you still use Google that blocks the AI overview.

Load "Hide AI Overviews" from the Chrome Web Store. I've used it for about a year and never see AI Overviews.

Yeah, I think Google believes their AI overviews are generally very good, and they don’t want to offer what they see as a deliberately degraded and inferior version of their core product, even on an opt-in basis. (My main quibble is that I’m not convinced their AI overviews are actually that good.)

I think it’s just a refusal to turn off the AI Overviews for anyone

Reddit will soon require users to be logged in, likely in an effort to stifle AI overviews. https://bit.ly/4zeInRn

Chatbots and AI agents eliminate much of that friction. AI Overviews are Google’s no-late-fees moment, but it’s unclear whether that will be enough.

This was ENTIRELY predicable the moment they forced AI Overviews on their users and pivoted to zero-click searches🙄
It can be quite difficult to comprehend company valuations this large. Zero sympathy. High schadenfreude.

So Google's AI Overviews are undermining search's profit, and Muse is undermining Instagram? This is fascinating... and hilarious!

I see Google might be rolling back its AI overviews for this very reason.

I was SO excited about having a better UDM14 but it's lies. It's all lies. You get one (1) search with the superior google, and then the NEXT time you type a search into the "1998 google" interface it kicks you out and it's BACK BACK TO AI OVERVIEWS FOR YOU. DRINK YOUR SLOP. DRINK IT!!!

Google just got a The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Easter egg that transports you back to the 1998 version of the search engine — complete with blue links for results. https://bit.ly/4itLs8X

The problem with AI overviews in search engines is that it has the mental capacity of answering surface level questions. When you asks it that is filled with nuance and complexity, you’re to receive a definitive “I don’t know”. AI can’t deliver an answer it has no experience in it that humans had.
