PA-RISC is cute too,,, you know what? A lot of ISAs are pretty cute,,,,

not x86 though.
I don't care what anynyan says, Itanium was a cute ISA

Not even the AMD64 variant, but like, ALPHA or PA-RISC!

when i say "stuff" i do mean clothes and furniture. but also i want you to picture like "kate do you really need this NeXT workstation and these SGI computers and also this early POWER machine and these several HP pa-risc machines and also an Alpha and every generation of sparc and" YES

I may or may be not cooking something.

A perennially annoying topic is greybeard unix nerds complaining about having to adopt Rust. Oh, git won't compile anymore on the PA-RISC pizzabox workstation you keep in your cat piss-reeking garage? Here's a solution for you: no one gives a shit

I now own a PA-RISC HP 9000/712 running NEXTSTEP 3.3 and a Sun SPARCstation 20 running NEXTSTEP 3.3.

And I installed them off the same CD-ROM.

A bunch of people are mad Debian is requiring rustc to work, and therefore dropping support for old architectures. The architectures in question:

- DEC Alpha (1992-2007)
- PA-RISC (1986-2008)
- Motorola 68000 (1979-1994)
- Hitachi SuperH (this is the only one that still seems in [very niche] use)

HP 9000/750 [1991] - A very high end PA-RISC workstation, based on 66Mhz PA-7000 CPU.
It could accommodate 192 MB of RAM, had four EISA and two DIO-II expansion slots.
Prices started at $52,890, equivalent to $124,755.97 in 2025.

Reminds me of the poor 900 MHz PA-RISC CPU I accidental murdered, still one of the biggest suck moments in recent years... at least the socket somehow survived with mild burn marks...

Mom, it's not a fetish. It's just a phase.

IBM AIX on PowerPC
Digital UNIX on Alpha
HP-UX on PA-RISC
Silicon Graphics IRIX on MIPS
Sun Solaris on SPARC

Like tears in the rain.

There may be CAD files, but if they're in a format that is obsolete and the software to open them only runs on unobtainium hardware... My university had a CAD lab based on HP ME-10. Those PA-RISC workstations are gone, the plotters froze solid, it's called Creo now and can't open files from 1995.

And here we go, a true #Unix machine with two #PA-RISC CPU's, OS is HP UX and one the last #RISC workstation #HP released, while switching to Intels ultimate lemon Itanium, should have stayed with their own silicon. This will be fun to figure out.

Mark Kettenis added support for heartbeat blinking LEDs based on system load averages to OpenBSD/arm64 and OpenBSD/riscv64 boards. 😎

Similar functionality also exists on sparc64 and HP PA-RISC machines.

@osnews.com liked my Silicon Graphics Indigo 2 piece, so I wonder what Thom will think about this one on my two new PA-RISC machines:

Well, you already have Sparc & MIPS boxes so you do need a PA-RISC machine to complete the collection.

Yes, I'll send you links to IBM Power series machines once you have the PA-RISC one 😈

Memory safety trumps retro computing: Alpha, PA-RISC, m68k, SH4 face the chop in 2026 Debian's APT package manager will have a "hard requirement" on Rust from May 2026. This move may make some rather big waves.…

PA-RISC NeXTSTEP installed on the HP Model 715/80! Very snazzy. Unfortunately my SCSI drive is too big for it, so right now it's booted from a PiSCSI/RaSCSI.
