“PBGC currently protects the retirement security of about 31 million American workers in private sector pension plans.”

The PBGC manages the Pension funds of companies that have gone bankrupt. I get a PBGC pension. What is DOGE doing there? You go through a lot to get your pension benefits. Doubt there is fraud and abuse to be found.

Hubby – who retired 10 years ago from the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. as a pension actuary – can talk your ear off about this. While the PBGC (like the FDIC) is only supposed to pay out from money collected from the pension funds, US taxpayers have ponyed up to bail out the PBGC in the past.

Then again the PBGC is basically counting on Congress just bailing out the Teamsters every decade or so...

And all of these loons and goons got paid, which means there's paperwork to show where they were and who signed off.

I was a sub- or sub-sub-contractor on projects for INS, USAID, DAU, NIH, DOL, and PBGC. There were two or more layers of sign-off just to get to billing.

I. First, as promised, let's expose the lie:

The Treasury Department did NOT declare the United States insolvent. They wouldn't. That's not how our money works (see: MMT).

The Financial Report FY2025 uses the word "insolvent" ONCE to describe the PBGC program.

From PBGC charter:

"Guiding Principle: To ensure intra-agency data transparency to promote efficient and
appropriate use of, and investment into, agency data resources."

Totally at odds with DOGE's MO.

A lot of Seniors who once worked for a company that went bankrupt now collect from the pension funds PBGC manages.

PBGC- taxpayers bailed out stolen pension money by businesses n owners!🤔
Today’s a great day to remind everyone that Social Security has a fraud rate of 0.00625%, which is far lower than private sector retirement programs.

But the older folks who have their social security checks direct deposited? That core group of likely voters? That group of people who were lonely enough to call me and try to figure out how to keep me talking about the PBGC?

We can make this really unpopular. We can make them care.

Admittedly, I saw my father’s corporate pension go the PBGC, so I do recognize that corporate bankruptcy pension ditching is a real thing. (Thank goodness for the PBGC.)
May 18, 2026 at 12:32 AM
And don't realize that if they are lucky enough to get minimal PBGC payments because their pensions were stolen, don't realize Repubs hate that, too.
December 26, 2024 at 5:17 PM
...to their active members for the future. they have to keep the promises to the retirees, so they will need to start cutting benefits for actives. if it gets really bad they will take a buyout from the PBGC, but that would bankrupt the PBGC way faster than predicted...

I guess PE firms have destroyed all the corporate pension plans and have no need of the PBGC anymore?

The Romney / Bain capital model:
Load them up with debt paid to the VC 'management' company, then declare bankruptcy, screwing the vendors and sticking the pension plan on PBGC ( taxpayers ! ).

All 'perfectly legal' !

When I worked in a 401k/Pensions call center, I frequently had to explain the differences, and whether their company could get their money back if it went out of business.

People did NOT typically know what the PBGC is- the Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation needs better PR.
December 13, 2024 at 2:00 AM
And turning the liabilities over to the PBGC...which many Repubs also want to go away.

DOGE reported;
Through 1/29/2025, 85 DEIA related contracts totaling ~$1B have been terminated within the Dept. of Ed, GSA, OPM, EPA, DoL, Treasury, DoD, USDA, Commerce, DHS, VA, HHS, State, NSF, NRC, NLRB, PBGC, USAID, RRB, SSA, SBA, BLM, CFPB, NPS, and NOAA.

Pension plans invest in the stock market, too. The entity that backstops pension plans when companies fold or go thru bankruptcy is the PBGC, a part of the federal government, i.e. under Trump’s purview. 😬
