I'm dumbfounded every time I see this methane graph
We don't know what the last time was that methane concentrations were this high (1943 ppb @noaa.gov).
Maybe 55 million years ago during the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM)?

At first I was like “this is surely a typo for PETM” and then I saw the map.
Sanaa had to return to Egypt. Rather than forming a first dissertation chapter, the PETM project ended up being completed and published in Geology while we patiently waited for her to be able to come back to Michigan and start her PhD.

The "azolla event" took place about 49 Mya and for 800,000 years, blooms of azolla helped drive carbon levels down to reverse the PETM greenhouse and bring Earth into our current ice age. Very happy to add them to the Geology Timeline Project.
