Isn’t runaway ocean acidification associated with several past mass extinctions?

We don't need more meetings.

We don't need more global studies.

We need more funding on the ground to stop extinctions.

Also let's keep in mind these guys survived five to six mass extinctions!

Gee, whatever could be interfering with life forms that one species causes 10,000 annual extinctions to? We all, whenever & wherever possible, eat ORGANIC PLANT-BASED to save Earth Life.

"The five mass extinctions of life on earth were unavoidable, but the current crisis in which we stand to lose countless ways of being is an unnatural extinction of our making" (191).

"As environments became increasingly oxygenated, extinctions were increasingly associated with hyperthermals, such as during the end-Permian mass extinction"

...and the brutal persecution -- genocides, extinctions, enslavements, and so on -- of the indigenous peoples of the Americas and Australia and Africa and Asia is... what? ...chopped liver?

and oceans became anoxic and the like. Life survived what it could in pockets and adaptations occured, but there are limits to how much hell life can adapt to.

That's how you get a mother of all extinctions, the great dying.

Thread.

We are captured by fossil fuels and our governments are supportive and complicit - in increasing emissions while the Earth faces extinctions, food supply issues, extreme weather ... etc etc
Building infrastructure for fossil fuels is literally one strategies that the fossil fuel industry laid out over a decade ago as a way to delay climate action & extend their industry. Carney is using their play book step by step. He is 100% on board with delaying climate action.

People who believe humans can save the planet by going extinct are being optimistic and are giving humans credit for their accidental planet saving capacities. The sad fact is that our own extinction merely means that all the other extinctions will go unrecorded and unlamented. Lament now or never.

Surviving 86–47 might be as historic as surviving the ice age or one of the other mass extinctions? 🤣

They cause local extinctions. Is this not true?

Sure, it was humans upset the balance.

Billions of us human animals have free will & make the choice multiple times every single day to eat our fellow animals. Vile to watch the primitive, willfully blind, eat the dead. We MUST eat plant-based to Save Earth & end the extinctions, suffering, filth, destabilization, losses, injustices

extinctions aren't inherently bad, we wouldn't have what we have today if it wasn't for extinctions. food for thought

Paging @heinrich.senate.gov and @whitehouse.senate.gov. Is $39 a year worth blowing up most of America’s environmental laws?

Think of the increased health care costs. The litigation costs to figure out the new uncertainties. The extinctions. The damage to public lands. Clear cutting national forest
New @rff.org BAAJA modeling suggests $39 per household per year in residential electricity bill savings, up from $19 and $14 in Columbia and Greenline modeling. Typical household electricity cost is ~$1800/yr, so $39/yr is 2% savings. Better than 1%!

But BAAJA is really not an affordability bill.
New Columbia BAAJA modeling suggests about $19 per household per year in residential electricity bill savings, up from $14 per household per year in the September Greenline modeling. Say what you will about BAAJA, its electricity affordability impacts are basically nil. A 1% effect if you're lucky.

Vast new fossil record challenges story of Earth’s ‘big five’ mass extinctions🧪

Model suggests 3 of the “Big Five” mass-extinction events were gradual declines in biodiversity, rather than the sudden cataclysms described by other reconstructions.
Vast new fossil record challenges story of Earth’s ‘big five’ mass extinctions
An artificial-intelligence model trained on nearly four million fossils suggests that three of the extinction events might have happened more gradually than previously thought.

Happy Halloween from Yerevan 🦇

Everyone at the night of the never-ending nature COP finale is either a zombie or waking up right now.

So TL;DR: Humanity’s halftime scorecard on reversing extinctions should scare us. Did countries dodge the worst or put it off for another COP?

Ever wondered where pumpkins came from?

They evolved to be munched on by mammoths, but squash survived Ice Age extinctions with human help, becoming one of the oldest examples of plant domestication in the Americas.

Happy Halloween!🎃
