Text excerpt from THE RILL LORD, sixth and final book (April) of the Triempery Revelations series by L.L. Stephens. Snip is of an older character, Chyralane, the powerful Denizen of Phaer, doing her nightly exercises. Glow from orange station lights painted the walls inside the Customhouse, casting the room in tones of burning gold. Denizens, prizing their lofty views and the fresh air such heights afforded, seldom shuttered the windows of their high rooms overlooking the Rill Mount and Dazunor Rannuli’s shimmering canals. Chyralane Rannuleonis bent at the waist slowly, arms outstretched until her palms rested on the floor. She held this position while counting to one hundred before rising. Still limber as a girl, she told herself. It was important to maintain the body’s flexibility in age. She had noticed that Iphithus was beginning to walk stiffly, like an old man. She would have to take him aside for one of their talks.

fun fact Ilaphaer’s name was originally Honour! in her original lore she used Honour for anonymity, but I wanted her to have a real name. “Ila” was just the name i named my first tav because it was the name i was trying out going by, and “phaer” also means honour, so i just stuck them together lol

Snip shows a confrontation between Dorilian Sordaneon and Chyralane Rannuleonis, Denizen of Phaer. Dorilian issues an ultimatum: Dorilian pointed again. “You need to keep me alive, Denizen. And you will do nothing against my interests because I don’t have to die to stop the lifeblood of this city from flowing. That you know. But know this too—my flesh is Rill flesh, and I am growing into it. Heed… me… well. If you ever threaten me again or those I hold dear, my allies or my interests, I will render your precious station useless. It will take more than promises and a young Prince’s goodwill to bring it back. It will not happen in my lifetime… and it certainly will not happen in yours.” The pain of her broken bones was now making Chyralane nauseous, her gut twisting despite her struggle to mask the effects. She saw stark capitulation paling the faces of Iphithus and those with him. None of them would challenge Dorilian. Not now to save her life, not ever again. He might yet attain full Rill potential—and if he did so outside of Seven Houses control, he would undertake to destroy them. Rill Lord. We waited centuries for him—and now we find we cannot chain him!

Moonlight did her face no kindnesses, revealing the seamed canvas of her skin. How had she gotten to him? A look behind her showed Tutto still standing watch at the door. She waved a beringed hand. “I was willing to walk all the way around on garden paths to avoid your guard.” Her intense gaze fixed on him. “You are difficult to get alone.” Dropping her gaze, she sank into a deep curtsey that belied her incredible age. “A moment of your time, Thrice Royal, no more than that.” Dorilian assigned the woman a name: Chyralane, Denizen of Phaer. “For what reason? Is not the Rill performing well enough on your behalf?” She stiffly rose and looked across the Lago. “The Entity is wondrous, marvelous—a gift from the gods.” Her meaning slipped like a needle of ice between his ribs.
