Question: Dear Hollie Michaels: What is the most important thing to keep in mind when you create GNs for children? Answer: Is this graphic novel a book a kid/teen wants to carry around with them? Are my hooks and story strong? Are my characters layered? Does my art tell the story and keep the reader engaged?

Dear Hollie Michaels: What are the best ways illustrators can attract your attention in a pitch event? Final art that shows a strong sense of character design, showcasing movement (not a portrait) and strong visual storytelling through layout and color. From, Hollie Michaels.

To Robyn Chapman: Three biggest mistakes with pitches? Not having a good idea of what age group your book is written for. Also, not including comp titles, or bad comp titles. Your comp titles should be fairly recent and have good sales numbers. And generally, the author should have a similar platform as you. If you're a debut author, be cautious about only comping to famous bestsellers. From, Robyn Chapman.

Graphic with a curious looking kid asking: Dear Hollie Michaels, What are the three biggest mistakes with pitches? The answers: 1. Talking about theme and mood, but not what the project is about. 2. Using comps that are old or classics. 3. Illustrating only character designs and not showing sample pages.

Dear Robyn Chapman: What makes a pitch effective? The sample pages are key-- they're the part of the pitch I go to first. The storytelling, pacing, and dialogue need to be strong. The art needs to be a good fit for the age group, and a good fit for the publisher you're pitching to.

Dear Hollie Michaels: What genres in each age category would you like to see more of? Honestly, I'm wide open. I'm looking for the kid appeal. Would my second grader pick that book up? Would my middle schooler refuse to return the book to the library? I want something kids won't want to put down. From, Hollie Michaels.

Dear Robyn Chapman: Why would editors attend a pitch event when agents are submitting queries to them already? A pitch event is a convenient way to discover new talent, and I don't have to worry about writing rejection letters. (Writing rejection letters is one of the worst parts of the job.) I can only skim a broad range of work and only reach out to the creators I'm interested in. And there's always a chance I'll discover the next big author, long before anyone else does. That's the dream! From Robyn Chapman.

Dear Hollie Michaels: What should illustrators consider when creating the art file for their pitch? Make sure you are sharing color samples and/or strong sketches with clear line work. Learn whatever magic spell you need to get it small enough to upload/send around but not look like it's low resolution. From, Hollie Michaels
