#POLYTHEISM
Oh wow, yeah 😂

I was born into it, went to Catholic school all the way up through my last two years at college 😱, though really I deconstructed much earlier.

I took the monotheism-to-polytheism-to-atheism route.

There is an answer but it’s I admit not a particularly compelling one in and of itself: the god of the Bible is in favt several different deities that were gradually combined into one singular deity as Judism transitioned from Polytheism, to Henotheism, to strict Monotheism.

A figure in a flowing crimson cape is being hauled up a staircase by a line of dark-clad helpers, toward a tall black panel where a man in a jersey stands with his arms flung wide, gazing upward. Behind them, a vast furnace-hall glows in orange light, all girders and great iron machinery. One has s…

Religiously, sure that's where the promised land comes from. Historically, from secular sources as I listed, the Jews are indigenous to the Levant. The religion stems from the Levant. An offshoot of the Canaanites that eventually gave up polytheism and began worshiping only one God from the pantheon

Ah yes, Omriide Israel, where polytheism was not just practiced but legally protected.

Sure, date it back as long as you like. After all, Ethiopia is my homeland.

ancient polytheism was at one point alive and also had many complex forms!

lol there was definitely some layers of orientalism to it. to be fair i think most of them had a more sophisticated take that what i can lay out in 300 chars. more like "hinduism is the closest answer we have to what does indo-european polytheism look like if not displaced by monotheism"

also this is especially the right move since the gods in that setting seem to agree with each other that they can have exclusive rights to the worship of different mortals, rather than demanding some sort of polytheism, so there’s not even a “well, still gotta keep that guy happy” element to it

Americans have a really hard time with this because culturally we elide the distinction between a *multiculturalism* that's foregrounded by a couple big deal monotheisms, and a genuine *polytheism*.

a fun gambit, but what constitutes a god is a matter of perspective

and from the perspective of nearly all, I believe the correct answer here is polytheism

OK so, relating to this, I saw the ReligionForBreakfast video on pre-Islamic Arabian polytheism some months ago, liked the overview on Fate and the struggle against Fate, so I wanted to look into it again, ended up finding one of the hadiths in which God refers to himself as al-Dahr.
Different things have me thinking about a "metaphysics" of struggle in paganism, partially per Artaud, was thinking about pre-Islamic Arabian polytheist ideas about Fate but somehow every instance of revisiting the subject of Norse Heathenry even by chance always succeeds in "triggering" something.

Getting kicked out of the Karaite group for talking about polytheism in the Torah and suggesting that a plain reading of the Torah requires you to accept that Yahweh is an interloper deity who usurped El.

How cool would it be if Egyptian Christians hadn't gone Christian, but had instead maintained traditional Egyptian polytheism. You could say things like:

"All Copts are Bast-ards."

But alas...

You know even with The Discourse in Magic spaces frustrates me it’s still so much better than where I was involved online a year before getting into the game (the trenches of reconstruction/revival polytheism groups)
