Fortunately, Washington State U was happy to collaborate, and we extracted PPCPs from bee tissues collected along a rural-to-urban gradient in Washington State. Their metadata and variable collection was exceptional, so we had a BUNCH of potential variables to associate w PPCPs.

I'm super excited for this to 🐝 out!
Check out our study looking at pharmaceuticals (PPCPs) in honey/sweat/bumblebees. In short, human dev, plant abundance, and bee taxa were predictive of PPCP presence. We also used pinned specimens, meaning there could be more to be found in similar collections
My first post! And to top it off, our paper on pharmaceuticals in honey, sweat, and bumble bees is out today! If you love rstats, bees, entomology, ecology, or open science, then this is one for you! link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Advanced Composites for Effective Wastewater Contaminant Removal
In recent years, environmental pollution has emerged as one of the most pressing global challenges. Among the various pollutants, pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) have garnered particular attention due to their adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems and human health. This heightened awareness has spurred researchers to explore innovative solutions for mitigating the presence of these substances in water bodies. A groundbreaking study published in the Environmental Science and Pollution Research journal takes a novel approach by investigating the simultaneous removal of three prominent contaminants: bisphenol S, carbamazepine, and clonazepam, using a composite material that merges titanium oxide with a coconut shell-based substrate.

High-Throughput Monitoring of 323 Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) and Pesticides in Surface Water for Environmental Risk Assessment
The ubiquity of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) and pesticides in aquatic environments has raised significant ecological concerns due to their potential to disrupt aquatic ecosystems. This study presents a high-throughput ultraperformance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method without sample enrichment to monitor 323 PPCPs and pesticides in the surface water of the Jingmi Water Diversion Canal in Beijing, China. One hundred and three PPCPs and pesticides were detected, with the highest detection frequency observed for antibiotics, which constituted 25.2% of the total detections. Notably, the average concentrations of detected PPCPs and pesticides were significantly higher in the winter (69.0 ng/L) than in the summer (42.1 ng/L). Spatial characterization indicated higher concentrations of PPCPs and pesticides in urban areas compared with suburban areas, with carbendazim, caffeine, atrazine, and diazepam being the most frequently detected compounds. The ecological risk assessment based on risk quotient values identified moderate to high risks for aquatic organisms, particularly in urban areas and during winter. These findings highlight the necessity for improved wastewater treatment technologies and continuous environmental monitoring to protect aquatic ecosystems from the adverse effects of PPCPs and pesticides.
