Right now, the PRC has issues of redundancy (the US counterforce strategy means many of its weapons may be destroyed pre-launch, particularly its ICBMs in the western provinces) and coverage (the US is huge, hitting all targets right now isn't feasible and many are hardened).

This isn't quite accurate. There's a reason China is building up its arsenal (from around 600 warheads today to around 1,000 by 2030 and 1,500 by 2035 is the plan), and it is because the PRC wants to be able to reliably confront the US (and Russian) nuclear deterrents.

Yes, the USA and PRC, for one of many times, were on the same side in a major war and a proxy war, which meant the US spent that decade of the Vietnamese-Cambodian War backing the Khmer Rouge against Vietnam to stick it to Hanoi. The USSR backed Vietnam.

This was also why the PRC backed out of expanding the Sino-Soviet border war into a full-scale nuclear war. It was to the USSR in the late 1960s what the USSR was to the USA. And while Mao didn't care the rest of the PRC high command drew the line at collective suicide over the old Amur border.

This is correct. And the US still possesses a Cold War inheritance that China does not.
A full nuclear exchange between the US and the PRC would most assuredly be devastating for the US and kill millions of Americans. But it would be Armageddon for the PRC.

The most key reason this also worked was that the USSR took until the late 1960s/70s to catch up to and then bypass the US in raw numbers and even then never outmatched it in ability to deliver nukes. US leaders never really appreciated this, Soviet leaders could never afford to forget it.
This was basically the Eisenhower administration's bluff in the 1950s and Kennedy's in the 1960s. The Soviet military had a massively larger conventional force, the explicit US doctrine was "massive retaliation" (that is, dropping hydrogen bombs on the Warsaw Pact) should they attempt to use it.
