What strikes me as particularly worrisome about his ideas--that prophethood is a "call to adventure" etc--is that it comes wearing the clothes (literally) of traditionalism, but it is in fact a profoundly modern variety of individualism.

For context, Jesus is considered one of the most significant and revered figures in Islam. Islam explicitly identifies Jesus as the Messiah. Believing in his prophethood is a part of being Muslim. Any Christians who don't know this should do their due diligence and read up on it.

And when that belief (which I took to be real and earnest, not some kind of heel-turn to Instagram grifter prophethood or something) causes you to tell your vulnerable partner that the spirit of her dead mother has possessed you+ wants to speak to her? That's vile.

Still! I'm not sure an ordinary person would come out the other side of such an experience and decide they were a powerful prophet+ spiritual medium. The Bronze Age was so real when it looked forward through time and realized you cannot have real prophethood in an age of unchecked individualism
