Fascinating how Iran 2026 is the complete opposite of Iraq 2003 in continental Europe.

In Spain I'd trace it to PSOE vs PP govt.

In Germany I'd say it's partly a CDU vs SPD govt, but also a growing comfort with armed force.

In France, it underscores the Gaullist reconciliation with Atlanticism.
The Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez openly condemns the US-Israeli attack as a violation of international law. He also pressures the EU to take a firmer stand against this unilateral act of aggression:

Starmer's Labour party in theory should have loads of contacts with the PSOE & be learning from them. Instead it's just Democrats & bit of SPD in Germany who are kinda failing. Image of Sanchez in Anglo media is that he's some kinda of left wing T May who's hobbling together a coalition

Just in case you all don't know what Sánchez is up against, protestors outside the PSOE HQ in Madrid are singing a tribute to the Blue Division, the unit of the Spanish Army Franco sent to fight with Nazi Germany

You haven’t understood anything that’s going on. & it doesn’t surprise me that in Germany you’re beating pro-Palestine protesters. You’re entering a new ‘33. The problem here is that the PSOE is a center-right party that’s rolling out the red carpet for the fascism of the extreme right, PP and Vox👇🏻

In a way, it’s a much more extreme and much madder version of the SPD in Germany (Trump 1.0) and PSOE in Spain (Trump 2.0) making a point of refusing defence spending increases and framing it partly as defiance of US demands.

Are Americans somehow unaware of PSOE? Or of Germany finally getting off its ass and passing self-ID? www.zeit.de/politik/deut...
(And before Americans trot out Manchin: a) we have FDP, and b) a bunch of all-Democratic states like California have no self-ID.)

The main conservative Barcelona based newspaper, la Vanguardia, is already talking (should I say "asking for"?) about a Große Koalition in Spain, PSOE (S&D) and PP (EPP) to face the new scenario which requires a more defense focused approach in politics.

This migh be normal in Germany but not here.

The main far-right party there, Vox, got over half what the PSOE did, and there's still what seems like a reasonably healthy, more centre-right party in-between them. Don't know how Vox are polling at the moment, but they don't seem to have the momentum of the AfD in Germany or the RN in France.

Yes, electoral success goes up and down, that's how that works

You're acting as if these aren't mainstream parties, or that SPD Germany didn't have the most seats until earlier this year

And psoe having a *faction* that aligns with the Democratic Party doesn't mean that's not centre-right
July 1, 2025 at 6:15 AM
SDP in germany SDP in Finland, SDU in Sweden, PveA in the Netherlands, PSOE in Spain. Most of those countries also have at least one more major party with at least tepid support for all those policies - more support than usually seen from Democrats anyway.
