Black-striped greenhood (Pterostylis melagramma) near Gipsy Point, East Gippsland, VIC.
Usually only the odd scattered plant seen at this location in good years growing on the edge of large colonies of other greenhoods (P. curta, P. nutans and P. pedunculata).

Pterostylis pedunculata (Maroonhood) with visitor near Central Tilba NSW. Fungus gnats are usually listed as the pollinator of this widespread winter-flowering orchid but this looks more like a male non-biting midge (Chironomidae) to me - so maybe just a visitor rather than a pollinator? #orchids

Early Blunt Greenhood (Pterostylis curta) at Gipsy Point, VIC in late July. Often seen in large colonies in spring -just a few scattered plants out on this visit. Distinctive characteristic of this widespread greenhood is the twisted labellum apex (twists to the left -viewed from the front) #orchids

Flowers that work as a light trap! Pterostylis are masters of using light and in some case scent to achieve pollination, #Pterostylis barbata is a great examples of this! With the pollinia at the top of the flower they use light to fool their pollinator to travel further up to the pollinia!

Kicking off the winter orchid season (a little late this yr!) with a scout around Genoa/Gipsy Point, VIC. Still several small patches of Pterostylis concinna (Trim Greenhood) out growing alongside 3 other greenhood sp. in early Aug. Usually the earliest greenhood out here (as early as May) #orchids
