I think Occam’s razor is probably correct in some sense (Kolomogorov), but it is also *vastly* underspecified, and it has been misapplied constantly since it was first stated.
(… actually it was misapplied over a millennium before William of Occam, by Ptolemy, to argue the earth is stationary. :3)

Of course, the concept of being able to depict the world with perfect accuracy is a modern one. Up until relatively recently, we didn't even know what most of the planet looked like. Before that, the tools and technology of cartography were limited such that our best efforts were still just a guess
