“Bastard” is from Old French fils de bast “packsaddle son,” or a child conceived while traveling, with the notion being a child conceived with someone who’s not your spouse while you’re traveling away from home. Also possibly implying that the child is perceived as a burden.

Ultimately, I think we’re just back to the DK series not really caring about its exact position in time relative to the Mario series. (After all, this wasn’t an issue post-Donkey Kong Country until Mario Kart 64). DK is a franchise that’s thematically about family and legacy in a way Mario isn’t.

Back to Falmouth on the bus, counting off the rural rosary. Gweal Dues. Tremenhere. Lower Manhay. Laity Turn. Herniss. Packsaddle. I am still childishly pleased to see a field of horses.

Bus was quicker than I expected. Whenever I pass the stops on the route I remember how strange the place names seemed when I first arrived, like charms on a bracelet. Norway Inn. Come-to-Good. Packsaddle. Playing Place. Wheal Jane, which sounds like a lost Dylan song.
