Thousands of years ago, the Siachen Glacier didn't just sit in its valley; it advanced so far down to Tirit that it choked the river. The proof? Deep clay bands left behind by a massive, transient paleolake.

Looks like a dusty afternoon is in store for El Paso, Texas today. A long dust plume coming out of Mexico is aimed right at El Paso. Dust originating from as far upwind as the Janos, Chihuahua, area, as well as Ascension and Paleolake Palomas. #txwx

Some sort of threshold must have been exceeded at about 0000Z UTC, because blowing dust began to be visible on GOES satellite in the Chihuahuan Desert then, from White Sands and the Paleolake Palomas basin. Not a heavy dust event by any means, and looks like it will miss El Paso. #nmwx #txwx

Levy has a #newarticle out telling readers what’s hot and what’s not in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica. Turns out there’s also a previously undescribed paleolake in the Goldman Pond basin that post-dates Glacial Lake Washburn: doi.org/10.1080/1523....

A vanished Holocene lake once covered Central Iran, a region now defined by deserts.

Lake level fell not in one collapse, but through climate-driven pulses of expansion and contraction.

Alexander the Great’s route skirts its margins.

Not as windy in El Paso as yesterday, but sufficient enough to be raising dust this afternoon from Paleolake Palomas in Mexico. It looks like this dust will miss El Paso, due to more WNW trajectories, perhaps impacting Hudspeth County eventually. #txwx

Dated human footprints from the White Sands area of New Mexico suggest that people were in North America by ~23,000 calibrated years before the present.

The stratigraphic data...spans >23.6 thousand years to ~17.0 thousand calibrated YBP.

3/ At 300 km southeast of Amman, in the Khashabiyeh paleolake, a Franco-Jordanian team discovered eight kites forming a 17 km chain. Excavations (2013-2021) revealed charcoal dated to 7000 BCE (Pre-Pottery Neolithic B period).
