Another Palitoy (Kenner) Star Wars X-Wing rescued from a 40-odd year slumber in an attic, rebuilt and refreshed, and ready for a new home!

I love restoring these.

The specific AT-ST was the Kenner/Palitoy action figure scaled one. People have IDed many of the Zoids parts already, I believe the missile pod atop one of them is also from one, as are the robot lizard heads detailing the leg of the right.

This is like how Palitoy did amazing things adding parts to the APC and creating the Roboskull. I think of them as staff with a lot of talent but a small budget. So they have to use the toys Hasbro sends them, BUT they invest their limited money into very creative add-ons or advertising.

A rather splendid Brian Bolland ad for a Palitoy take on Darth Vader’s T.I.E. Fighter, from Dec 1st 1979’s Look-In. I’ve never seen this particular Bolland take on Star Wars merchandise before, and his ads for the franchise during the period are always fun.

One thing I like about Palitoy is their mold reuse- since they were making toys themselves in Britain and not in China, they cut costs by using the same heads, torsos, legs etc in different ways. Here’s my spare head collection which gives you an idea of what I mean

That’s been my feeling about Palitoy—they had a limited budget but made up for it with great creativity in how to recombine, or add to existing elements. Hasbro never had to be quite as clever in that way because they could just invest in new molds.
